Robert Rodriguez Thinks Its Possible That Disney Will Make a ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL Sequel
Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron’s Alita: Battle Angel was such a great flick and a lot of fans would have loved to see the story continue with a sequel. But, after the movie didn’t do as well as expected at the box office, the chances of seeing a sequel get made kinda flew out the window.
Both Rodriguez and Cameron would love to see a sequel get made and Rodriquez believes that it’s still possible that Disney will make a sequel for Disney+. While talking to Forbes in an interview, Rodriguez said:
“I think anything is possible. Disney bought Fox, and they have Disney+, so that is worth the conversation. I know other people would love to see another, and I would love to do another one. As far as where it would go or how it would be made, I think streaming has opened up many opportunities such as sequels. It’s already a pre-sold concept, it’s already got a built-in audience that wants to see it, and then it’s delivered to them in a way that’s the easiest for them to consume. So, it’s not a bad idea.”
It’s not a bad idea at all and I hope that Disney will at least have a conversation about producing a sequel. When previously talking about the plans for the future of the franchise, Rodriguez said that Cameron wrote up 1,000 pages of notes for him that spanned the course of a trilogy of films. So, they knew exactly where they want the story to go.
The film’s star, Christoph Waltz, previously opened up about the possibility of returning for a sequel and he said, “Of course!,” adding:
“But, you know, I’m as wise as you are. I haven’t heard anything and I’m a little disappointed and surprised that I haven’t heard a thing so far, because I know that it has followers. I know that people liked it and aside from what others said, I loved it and I liked working on it and I liked the result. You know, it was Fox and Fox doesn’t exist anymore. Now it’s Disney. Maybe it doesn’t fit into the Disneyfication, but I have no clue. I have no clue. Maybe they’re working on something and I wouldn’t be the first person to hear, but meanwhile, I haven’t heard anything.”
Rodriguez is keeping himself busy these days and is currently developing The Book of Boba Fett series for Lucasfilm and Disney+. But, this Alita sequel is a project that Rodriquez will happily make time in his schedule for. Now that he’s working with Disney, maybe a conversation about the sequel will actually happen.
