Robert Zemeckis' 1992 Horror Comedy DEATH BECOMES HER is Getting a Stage Musical
The classic 1992 Robert Zemeckis horror-comedy Death Becomes Her is being adapted as a stage musical and it’s coming in 2024.
The original movie was such a fun flick! It starred Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn, and Bruce Willis. The movie follows lifelong rivals Madeline Ashton and Helen Sharp, who, in their desperation to retain youthful beauty, drink a mysterious potion offering eternal youth, with comically disastrous results. When Madeline steals Helen's fiancé, plastic surgeon Ernest Menville, their already contentious relationship intensifies. As both women experience the surreal side effects of the elixir, enduring fatal accidents while remaining alive, they and Ernest face comedic challenges and discover the pitfalls of unnatural beauty and immortality.
Deadline shared the news and reported that “the world premiere of Death Becomes Her will run at Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre from April 30 – June 2, 2024.”
Megan Hilty (Wicked, TV’s Smash) takes on the role of Madeline Ashton with Jennifer Simard (Company, Once Upon A One More Time) taking on the role of Helen Sharp. The musical will tell the same story as the movie. Here’s a promo spot that was released:
“The musical comedy features an original score by Noel Carey and Julia Mattison and book by Marco Pennette. Tony Award winner Christopher Gattelli (Newsies) directs and choregraphs. The design team for the musical includes Derek McLane (Sets), Paul Tazewell (Costumes), Justin Townsend (Lights), Peter Hylenski (Sound), and Paul Kieve (Illusions). The Chicago staging is produced by Broadway In Chicago and Universal Theatrical Group.”
