Rocksteady Studios Reportedly Developing a BATMAN BEYOND Game as a PlayStation Exclusive
Rocksteady Studios, which is best known for giving us the Batman: Arkham series, is rumored to be working on a new game inspired by the animated classic animated series Batman Beyond, as a PlayStation exclusive.
The rumor comes from gaming insider Lunatic Ignus, who has a history of leaking reliable industry info. According to Ignus, the game is set to take inspiration from the Batman Beyond series but won’t adopt its animation style. Instead, elements from the show’s storylines could be expanded upon to craft a unique experience.
Rocksteady has historically developed games across multiple platforms. Since Batman: Arkham Asylum in 2009, every Rocksteady release has launched on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
The only outlier was Batman: Arkham VR, which released on PS4 and later on PC. A PlayStation-exclusive Batman Beyond game would be a significant move.
Adding weight to this report, Bloomberg reported that Rocksteady is indeed working on a single-player Batman game. While Schreier didn’t share details, he did mention the game is still years away.
So, there’s a chance that this could be a next-gen title launching alongside the PlayStation 6. And given Sony’s recent trend of eventually bringing exclusives to PC, a future release beyond PlayStation isn’t out of the question.
Now, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of a Batman Beyond-inspired game. Warner Bros. Montreal was reportedly developing a similar project, codenamed Project Sabbath, as a sequel to Batman: Arkham Knight. Set 10 years after Arkham Knight, the game would have explored a futuristic Gotham in line with Batman Beyond.
Despite all of the rumors and leaks, Project Sabbath was never officially announced and was ultimately scrapped in 2017. Some elements from it were reworked into Gotham Knights, and even Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is rumored to have borrowed the idea of a reborn Poison Ivy from that project.
For now, though, this Batman Beyond game remains just a rumor. Neither Rocksteady, WB Games, nor PlayStation have commented on the speculation.
Batman Beyond was created by Paul Dini, Bruce Timm, and Alan Burnett and it was a futuristic continuation of Batman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures.
The story followed a retired Bruce Wayne mentoring Terry McGinnis, a high schooler who takes up the mantle of Batman in a cyberpunk Gotham. The show ran from 1999 to 2001 and is widely regarded as one of DC’s best animated series.
I would love to see Rocksteady create a Batman Beyond game so I hope there is truth to this rumor!
