Ryan Reynolds on the Future of DEADPOOL in the MCU - “I See Deadpool as a Supporting Character"

Ryan Reynolds recently opened up about the future of Deadpool in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the hit film Deadpool & Wolverine.

Reynolds believes that Deadpool is going to be more of a supporting character moving forward, and that the next time we see the character it will most likely be in another character’s movie.

While talking to Andrew Garfield on Variety’s Actors on Actors, Reynolds said: “I see Deadpool as a supporting character much more than he is a main [character] or at the center.

“We center him sometimes because they want, that’s what they want. But you can’t center him unless you take everything away from him. You have to create a situation where he’s so much the underdog. And I don’t think I can do that again.

“If he comes back, I think he’s going to be in someone else’s movie. Channing Tatum is so excited to play Gambit, I would happily be the fifth banana in his movie or anybody else’s.”

Reynolds went on to explain: “My feeling is that [the] character works very well in two ways. One is scarcity and surprise. It had been six years since the last one, and part of the reason is that it swallows my whole life.

“You can’t take your hand off the stick all the way through development and post-production into marketing and promo.

“Then you kind of — I have four kids, and I don’t ever want to be on a first-name basis with any of them. I don’t ever want to be absentee and miss stuff. I, like, kind of die inside when I see their face and they have a competition, or a sports thing, or something, and I missed it.

“So I don’t know what the future of Deadpool will be, but Shawn [Levy] and I made the movie to have a beginning, a middle, and an end, and be a complete experience instead of a commercial for another one. I think it’s important, sometimes, to make space for a movie to just be a movie.”

While we don’t know for sure the next time we’ll see Deadpool on the big screen, I’m pretty confident that he will appear in Avengers: Doomsday and/or Avengers: Secret Wars. There’s also always the chance that he’ll have a bigger role in those films than we think.

What do you think about the future of Deadpool in the MCU? Where do you think we’ll see him pop up next?
