Ryan Reynolds Talks About His DRAGON'S LAIR Movie and Says Netflix Is Taking "Innovative Stabs"

It’s been a few years since it was announced that Ryan Reynolds was attached to star in and produce a film adaptation of the classic arcade game Dragon’s Lair. The project is still alive and well and being developed, and it sounds like Netflix is looking to do some interesting and innovative things with the film.

In a recent interview with Collider, Reynolds talked about the movie and teased some details, which include some risks on Netflix’s part. Here’s what he said:

“I can say that Netflix has approached Dragon’s Lair in a spirit of partnership that I’ve never really seen before. They’re taking such a swing with it. How we’re approaching it and attacking it and what we’re doing with it, I think will be pretty surprising to a lot of people. In its scope I mean. And I’m not sure, but I don’t think anyone’s ever tried it before quite like this. So I’m curious to see how it’ll go. It really intersects in a unique way with technology that I’ve never been privy to in the entertainment industry. So they’re taking some kind of pretty innovative stabs at this particular IP in a way that I’m blown away with. And I’m excited that they’re as along for the ride as we are.”

When I read between the lines of what Reynolds is saying here, it sounds to me like Netflix is developing a big-budget feature film that will incorporate some technology that might actually allow audiences to play the movie like we did with the original game. It could also be some kind of advanced choose-your-own-adventure movie. This is just me speculating with Reynolds’ talk of technology and innovation, but if they actually make this movie playable, that would be incredibly awesome!

The original game came from legendary animation director Don Bluth (An American Tail and All Dogs Go to Heaven), who is also a producer on the film. It was an incredibly popular video game. The story for that game follows a knight named Dirk the Daring, and he must rescue the fetching Princess Daphne from the clutches of the evil dragon known as Singe and the wizard Mordroc.

The film project is set up at Netflix with Dan and Kevin Hageman, who previously worked on The Lego Movie and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, writing the script. The Hagemans are also currently the showrunners of Nickelodeon's Star Trek animated series, and they wrote The Croods 2, which features Reynolds as one of the voice stars. Roy Lee (It and Doctor Sleep) is attached to produce.

Are you excited to see what Netflix does with Dragon’s Lair?
