Sadie Sink, Mckenna Grace, and More Reportedly Eyed to Play Rapunzel in Disney’s Live-Action TANGLED Remake

Disney’s live action adaptation of Tangled is apparently still very much alive. Despite chatter that the studio hit pause after Snow White struggled at the box office, new reports point to an active casting search for Rapunzel and a short list of fan favorite young stars in the mix.

The latest update comes from Nexus Point News, which reveals that Sadie Sink, Mckenna Grace, Emma Myers and Isabel May are being considered for the lead role. These four have become major standouts across film and television.

Sink broke out in Stranger Things, Grace recently starred in Regrettng You, Myers has become a favorite among Wednesday fans, and May recently joined Scream 7. According to Nexus Point’s report, one of them might already be pulling ahead.

"At this time, it remains unclear whether any of these actresses have formally screen tested for the role of Rapunzel. What we can confirm is that all four have been discussed internally and are among the names circulating through various channels.

“Of the names shared with us, Sadie Sink was referenced most consistently, with several independent sources mentioning her in relation to the project."

If that holds true, Sink could be the frontrunner, though nothing is set and Disney appears to be exploring every available angle as the remake continues to take shape.

There is also movement on the villain side of the story. Scarlett Johansson was recently linked to the role of Mother Gothel. Insider Jeff Sneider now believes she passed due to scheduling conflicts with Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman sequel and Mike Flanagan’s new The Exorcist film. That sends Disney back to square one for Gothel while they narrow down Rapunzel.

As for the director, Early chatter suggested that Baz Luhrmann was in the mix, though THR maintains that Michael Gracey is still set to direct. Gracey previously made The Greatest Showman and recently wrapped the Robbie Williams biopic Better Man.

The screenplay comes from Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, known for the recent I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel. Producing duties fall to Kristin Burr through Burr Productions with Emmy winner Lucy Kitada also on board.

The animated Tangled, released in 2010, took loose inspiration from the classic Rapunzel tale. Disney’s version followed a princess with luminous, magical hair who was "locked away in a tower since she was captured as a baby by an old hag.

“Her magical long blonde hair has the power to provide eternal youth, and the evil Gothel uses this power to keep her young. At the age of 18, Rapunzel becomes curious about the outside world, and when a prince uses her tower as a refuge, she asks him to help her escape."
