Sam Esmail's BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Reboot No Longer in the Works at Peacock

Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail has been developing a Battlestar Galactica reboot at Peacock for a few years now, but that project is no longer in development at the streamer.

The project was never given an official greenlight, but it’s something that I was actually looking forward to seeing. I would love to see what Esmail is planning for this with the franchise. I think he’ll deliver something really cool!

The reboot was a passion project for Sam Esmail, and while Peacock will no longer move forward with the project, it will be shopped around to other networks and streaming services, so there’s still a chance it could get made.

Michael Lesslie was hired to write the reboot in 2020, but then he left the project in 2021. Most recently, Derek Simonds was attached to serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner.

Ronald D. Moore, the creator of the 2000 series was previously asked about the new reboot and if he felt any ownership of the property.

He replied: “It's just like, godspeed, you know? Like you said, I rebooted and reinvented or whatever the term is we want to use so far. Far be it for me to begrudge anybody else from doing the same thing.

“And Sam Esmail called me personally to say, ‘Hey, you know, I want to do this. Are you ok with that?’ I was like, ‘You don't really need my permission, but I appreciate it!’ It was a lovely call, and I wish them the best of luck with it.”

Moore previously explained that he and Esmail discussed the upcoming show and learned that during his conversations, instead of starting from scratch, Esmail planned on keeping his show in the same universe as Moore’s show.

He said: “Sam called me and was very gracious, he didn’t pitch me the story so I don’t know. But he said his plans and he wasn’t going to re-start the show and recast it but he wanted to do something in the same universe.

“Sam’s amazing and I love Mr. Robot. I was like, you know, ‘You’re an amazing guy and amazing writer, go with god!'”

When previously giving an update on the project, Esmail shared: “I just read a great outline and it’s in great shape. Because the strike is over now – at least the WGA strike is over – we’re back into developing it.”

Hopefully, the project finds a new home, I want to watch this!
