Sarah Michelle Gellar on The BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Reboot and Why She's Not Interested in Joining

A few years ago it was announced that the classic ‘90s supernatural series Buffy The Vampire Slayer was getting the reboot treatment. Joss Whedon was developing it with writer Monica Owusu-Breen (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.).

The reboot was also going center on a new version of the vampire slayer, who was originally played by Sarah Michelle Gellar. The new show was referred to as “contemporary, building on the mythology of the original.”

A few months ago, executive producer Gail Berman offered an update on the project saying it was “on pause.” This didn’t come as a surprise after Whedon was canceled for multiple allegations of various forms of inappropriate behavior. But it is a project that Berman seemed passionate about.

There’s a chance that one day the show will go back into development, but if that happens, don’t expect Sarah Michelle Gellar to be involved. She was recently asked if she was interested in being involved during an interview with SFX Magazine and she said:

"I'm not. I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn't need to be done. We wrapped that up. I am all for them continuing the story because there's the story of female empowerment. I love the way the show was left: 'Every girl who has the power can have the power.' It's set up perfectly for someone else to have the power. But like I said, the metaphors of Buffy were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent."

I can see why people would want to remake the series, but there’s just no way that a reboot would ever be able to capture the greatness of the original show. I think they should just let it be, and I kinda hope that the reboot never happens. What do you think?
