THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER Season 3 Finally Reveals Sauron's First Ringwraiths
Fans have been waiting for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to really dig into some of the biggest events of Middle-earth's Second Age, and Season 3 looks like it's finally ready to deliver.
As Sauron's plans continue to unfold, the series is bringing one of Tolkien's most iconic groups into the spotlight, but not in the form most fans know.
Instead of introducing the terrifying Nazgûl we've seen in The Lord of the Rings, the new season takes us back to the beginning, showing these characters when they were still mortal men devoted to Sauron.
Known in the series as the Nazgnagôl, they'll offer a look at the tragic path that eventually transforms them into the Ringwraiths.
That approach came from J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay diving deep into J.R.R. Tolkien's writings to build an origin that feels rooted in the author's world.
Payne explained: "We love looking back at what inspired Tolkien. He led with language. Language became a scaffold on which the myth would hang. The word 'Nazgûl' means 'Ringwraith' in the Black Speech of Mordor. But before they were Ringwraiths, we know that these were just men."
He continued: "So we were able to derive in the Black Speech that 'nagôl' could mean 'servant.' 'Nazgnagôl,' therefore, literally means 'Ring-servant.'"
It's a cool detail that expands Tolkien's mythology while giving the series a chance to explore the corruption that slowly consumes these once-human followers.
Among those followers is Zubin Varla, who plays Khamûl the Easterling, one of the nine men destined to become a Ringwraith. A newly released first look at the character gives fans their earliest glimpse of one of Sauron's future deadliest servants before his humanity slips away.
Varla compared Khamûl's descent to another famous Tolkien character, explaining: "In a sense, they go on the same journey as Gollum. Evil begets evil, and violence begets violence. Their souls, and their bodies, are corrupted until they are literally hollowed out, almost devoid of physical form."
That comparison paints a pretty disturbing picture of what's ahead. Rather than becoming monsters overnight, these men appear destined for a gradual fall, watching their humanity stripped away piece by piece as Sauron's influence tightens its grip.
Season 3 also marks a major leap forward in the timeline. Picking up several years after the events of Season 2, the story unfolds during the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron.
With the conflict escalating, the Dark Lord sets his sights on forging the One Ring, the weapon that will give him the power to dominate his enemies, bend the peoples of Middle-earth to his will, and begin his reign.
Everything about the upcoming season suggests the series is moving closer to the Middle-earth fans recognize from Tolkien's novels and Peter Jackson's films.
Between the forging of the One Ring, the rise of the future Nazgûl, and a war that threatens the fate of the world, the stakes are finally reaching the scale many viewers have been waiting to see.
The first trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 arrives later today ahead of the show's November debut, and hopefully it'll give us an even better look at Khamûl and the other Nazgnagôl in action.
