THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER Season 3 Reveals Epic New Look at Gandalf, Sauron, and a Massive Mûmak
Amazon has offered another exciting preview for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3, and the latest images tease some of the biggest moments Middle-earth fans have been waiting to see.
Along with a striking new look at Charlie Vickers as Sauron, newly revealed artwork also gives us our first glimpse of Gandalf facing off against one of Tolkien's most intimidating creatures, the towering Mûmak of Harad.
Empire Magazine has unveiled two brand-new covers for the upcoming season. One cover spotlights Sauron in an official still, while the subscriber-exclusive edition features gorgeous artwork by Carlos Huante depicting Gandalf the Grey battling a Mûmak, the enormous Oliphaunt that readers of J.R.R. Tolkien's works will recognize. It's a fantastic reference that hints the series is continuing to dig further into Tolkien's legendary world.
Of everything The Rings of Power has introduced so far, Sauron's rise has easily become one of its most compelling storylines. Season 3 looks ready to lean fully into that transformation, with the Dark Lord finally stepping into the role fans have expected from the beginning.
Speaking with Empire, co-showrunner Patrick McKay teased exactly where things are headed: "This is the season where Sauron makes the One Ring in the volcano."
That signals a huge turning point for the series, but according to co-showrunner J.D. Payne, audiences are about to meet a version of Sauron unlike anything we've seen before: "We have a full-on villain this season, in a way that was quite different before,"
McKay expanded on that idea by explaining how dramatically the story changes once Sauron fully embraces his destiny, saying it "changes the tone of the show. This third season is darker, more dangerous. No one is safe."
For Vickers, stepping into Barad-dûr and finally taking Sauron's throne carried plenty of emotional weight. The actor recalled just how overwhelming the experience was. "The first day I walked onto that set, I cried. What an amazing privilege and honour to be able to tell that story."
One of Season 3's biggest sequences revolves around the forging of the One Ring, and it's apparently one of the most ambitious things the production has attempted. Filming stretched across two weeks because of the sheer scale of what they were creating.
McKay praised both the sequence and Vickers' performance, saying: "The single most ambitious, technically challenging sequence we’ve ever done on the show. Charlie’s performance is absolutely staggering. We never could have prepared for it."
While the first two seasons focused on introducing kingdoms, cultures, and characters across Middle-earth, the creative team says all of those story threads are finally beginning to collide.
As McKay explained: "The first two seasons were all about building out this world. But throughout that time, we’re lighting all these fuses and setting all these stories in motion. The third season is when all those bombs are starting to explode."
Season 3 jumps forward several years after the events of Season 2 and lands in the middle of the War of the Elves and Sauron. With the Dark Lord attempting to forge the One Ring, he'll seek the power needed to overwhelm his enemies, bend the peoples of Middle-earth to his will, and begin his reign over the realm.
The Rings of Power has certainly sparked plenty of debate among Tolkien fans since it premiered, but there's no denying the story is now moving into one of the most iconic chapters in Middle-earth history.
With Gandalf becoming a more recognizable figure, Sauron embracing his role as the ultimate villain, and the forging of the One Ring finally happening, Season 3 feels like it's entering the part of the story we’ve been waiting for.
Amazon also appears fully committed to telling the complete saga, with its reported five-season plan still intact, meaning there's still plenty of Middle-earth left to explore after this next chapter.
