Scarlett Johansson Says Oscars Snubbed AVENGERS: ENDGAME: “It’s One Of The Most Successful Films Of All Time”
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Scarlett Johansson didn’t hold back her frustration that the Marvel epic, Avengers: Endgame, was brushed aside by the Oscars despite its staggering box office success and emotional storytelling.
“How did this film not get nominated for an Oscar?” Johansson said, while promoting her upcoming directorial debut Eleanor the Great, which is set to premiere at Cannes.
She elaborated further, adding: “It was an impossible movie that should not have worked, that really works as a film, and also, it’s one of the most successful films of all time.”
Endgame pulled in nearly $2.8 billion globally, making it the second-highest-grossing movie of all time, behind only Avatar.
The Oscar snub discussion isn’t new, especially when it comes to superhero films. Marvel Studios has collected plenty of nominations in the Visual Effects category, with Endgame being no exception. Films like Doctor Strange, Iron Man, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Shang-Chi have all been acknowledged technically, but Best Picture has largely remained out of reach, Black Panther being the rare exception.
Joe Russo, co-director of Endgame, has also weighed in over the years, pointing out the disconnect between cultural impact and Academy recognition. Marvel films may dominate the box office and shape pop culture, but that doesn’t seem to carry over to the industry's most prestigious awards.
Outside of the Oscar conversation, Johansson confirmed she’s officially done with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even as some former Avengers dabble in multiversal cameos.
“It would be very hard for me to understand in what capacity [returning] would make sense for me, for the character that I play,” she said. “I miss my buddies and really would love to be with them forever, but what works about the character is that her story is complete. I don’t want to mess with that. For fans too — it’s important for them.”
It’s a fitting sentiment for a character who sacrificed everything to save the universe.
