AVENGERS: ENDGAME Directors Reveal Their Original Plan For The Iconic "Portals" Scene

Avengers: Endgame’s “Portals” scene is one of the most iconic moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The emotional weight of all those Marvel heroes joining the final battle against Thanos had audiences jumping out of their sets and cheering.

But according to co-director Joe Russo, this sequence was almost drastically different, and it took a battle in the editing room to actually bring it to life.

While speaking with Empire magazine, Russo shared that the original plan for the scene lacked the emotional punch that fans have come to love.

He said: “There was probably some debate regarding the most famous moment, I think, of all the Marvel films, which is the portals opening at the end of Avengers: Endgame.”

Initially, the sequence featured "the camera rotate around Steve Rogers and everybody was collected behind him."

Russo wasn’t happy with this approach, and he explained: “I remember fighting that one for months in the edit room. I’m not going to say who was on what side, but that was a grinder. I remember [Anthony] and I going, ‘Fuck it, we’re going to shoot it during reshoots.’”

The final version, with Sam Wilson’s Falcon saying “On your left” as a callback to Captain America: The Winter Soldier before the portals open was shot during post-production.

Even Stephen McFeely, one of the film’s writers, was initially content with the first cut. He admitted: “I thought the first cut worked pretty well.”

However, McFeely acknowledged the strength of the Russos’ instincts, saying: “One of the lessons I’ve learned over the course of working with these guys and working with Marvel is emotional-logic trumps logic-logic. It’s not a cop-out. It’s what the movie wants. It’s what your audience wants.”

The decision to rework the portals scene paid off, delivering emotional and awesome payoff that Marvel fans will never forget. Good luck to Marvel as they attempt reach that same bar in the next two Avengers movies.

The Russo Bros. are set to return to the MCU with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars with Robert Downey Jr. is trading his Iron Man suit for a villainous turn as Doctor Doom.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on May 1, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027.
