Scott Derrickson Says His V/H/S/85 Is Set in the Same Universe as THE BLACK PHONE

Director Scott Derrickson has shared some interesting information regarding the segment he directed in the upcoming anthology horror thriller V/H/S/85. It turns out that the story he tells in that film is actually set in the same universe as his fantastic horror film The Black Phone!

During a recent interview with CB, Derrickson explained that there’s a crossover in the story, but it’s so sentle that no one has picked up on it yet, but he reveals what it is. He said:

"Oh, there's actually a universe crossover in there, which I guess I made it too subtle because nobody's picking it up. But James Ransone tells Detective Wayne, when he's behind the glass, he was talking about Gunther. He says, 'He has these dreams that are prophetic.' And he says, 'My sister had the same gift. They drove her crazy, she killed herself.' And he said, 'Gunther's cousin Gwen has the same thing too. I f***ing hate it.' Well, the sister is Gwen's mom, and Gwen is Gwen from The Black Phone.

"It's literally the same gift, it's this ability to dream things before they happen, or have these prophetic, futuristic, surreal dreams.”

That’s pretty cool! I like when filmmakers do stuff like that with the project they work on!

In the film, “an ominous mixtape blends never-before-seen snuff footage with nightmarish newscast and disturbing home video to create a surreal, analog mashup of the forgotten 80s.” I enjoy this franchise, and this next film looks like it’s gonna be good!

V/H/S/85 takes viewers on “a journey into the grim underbelly of the forgotten 1980s. Unveiled through a made-for-TV documentary, five chilling tales emerge: scientists observe an unusual boy fixated on his TV, kids embark on a lake skiing adventure, a TV crew fights to survive a natural disaster, the early days of VR awaken something terrifying, and a deadly dream is captured on tape. Sinister secrets of the 1980s come to life in a way you’ve never seen before.”

Freddy Rodriguez (Six Feet Under) is set to lead the cast of the film, and he’s joined by Jordan Belfi, James Ransone, Dani Deetté, Rolando Davila-Beltran, Justen Jones, Marcio Moreno, Ari Gallegos, Forrest Hartl, Duffy McManus, Eric Pierson, Felipe de Lara, Tom Reed and Vivian Morse.

The segments in the film were also written by Zoe Cooper, Evan Dickson, C. Robert Cargill, Mike P. Nelson, Gigi Saul Guerrero. The directors include David Bruckner, Nelson, Guerrero and Natasha Kermani. V/H/S/85 is produced by Bruckner, Joshua Goldbloom, Brad Miska, Radio Silence, James Harris, Michael Schrieber and Adam Boorstin.

V/H/S/85 will begin streaming only on Shudder on October 6, 2023.
