SCREAM 7 Deepfake Twist Sparks Stu Macher Theories as Fans Question If He’s Really Dead

Scream fans, like myself, have been wondering about one question for decades: Is Stu Macher actually dead? Now that Scream 7 has hit theaters, that debate is louder than ever.

Even though we technically “see” Matthew Lillard return as Stu, the way the film handled it has left fans scratching their heads and looking for clues.

Warning: this article contains MAJOR spoilers for Scream 7. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, turn back now.

In Scream 7, the new Ghostface killers use AI technology to create a deepfake version of Stu Macher in order to psychologically torture Sidney Prescott.

The killers manipulate footage and dialogue to make it seem like Stu survived and is coming back to finish what he started. It’s a twisted, modern update to the franchise’s love of meta commentary.

But here’s the thing. Some fans aren’t buying that it was just a digital trick.

One fan on X summed up the growing theory perfectly: “They didn’t confirm Stu is dead. It’s still up in the air as always. Typical Kevin Williamson,"

And that wasn’t all they had to say. They continued:

"How would [Ghostface] know what Stu would look like in his 50’s if he died at the age of 17?... How did [Ghostface] know that Stu said 'Surprise, Sidney' and 'I always had a thing for you, Sid?'...So yes, it was definitely Stu in the video calls with Sidney. It was also him in the house killing the couple and burning it down."

That’s easily explainable because those are things that they would have seen him say in the original Stab movie. Regardless, fans are running with it.

The deepfake does look very convincing, which makes sense considering Lillard is physically involved in bringing the character to life again. Still, the movie drops a couple of details that keep the speculation alive.

At one point, Gale Weathers and Sidney discover that Stu was never registered at the Woodsboro morgue back in 1996. That little nugget of information feels like it could be setting something up.

The franchise has always played loose with “death,” and horror fans know the rule: unless you see a body and a definitive end, anything is possible.

For years, fans have clung to the idea that Stu survived the events of the original Scream. After all, he wasn’t shot in the head. In horror movie logic, that matters, especially in the Scream framchise.

Nother fan theory goes even deeper. It claims that Stu may have been operating in the shadows across multiple films. They point to a specific Ghostface move where the killer raises their hand high above their head before striking.

"That’s Stu’s signature move," added the fan. "He’s a psychopath and artistic. He loves to play with his victims. He’s always cared about making it feel like movies."

It’s the kind of obsessive franchise analysis that only hardcore Scream fans can deliver, and plenty of people agree. Some are already convinced that if Stu didn’t physically return in Scream 7, he’s being saved for Scream 8.

Honestly, the AI angle in Scream 7 is a cool, modern horror twist. It fits with the franchise’s obsession with trends, technology, and how horror evolves. But there’s something undeniably more exciting about the possibility of the real Stu Macher stepping back into the carnage.

Lillard has openly talked about wanting to return to the franchise for years, and now that he’s officially back in the mix, even in digital form, the door feels wide open.

With Neve Campbell already teasing ideas for the next chapter, it’s hard not to wonder if the long-running Stu survival theory might finally pay off. Kevin Williamson and the creative team clearly know how to stir the pot without giving away too much.

For now, fans are left debating timelines, morgue records, and hand gestures like it’s a true crime case. Whether Stu is dead, digitally resurrected, or waiting in the wings, one thing’s for sure, the franchise knows exactly how to keep us guessing.

Scream 7 is in theaters now. Are you buying the deepfake explanation, or do you think Stu is still out there?
