SCREAM 7 Might Not Be the End After All as Report Claims SCREAM 8 Is Already in the Works

The Ghostface saga may not be wrapping up withScream 7 as a new report says Paramount Pictures is already looking ahead to an eighth installment. If that’s true, the so-called “final chapter” marketing might not be telling the whole story.

According to Variety, the studio is mapping out plans for Scream 8, despite the heavy push that Scream 7 will be the last ride.

The trailers and TV spots have leaned hard into that idea, teasing “one last scream” and promising that “every phone call” and “every killer has led to this.” That sure sounds like a franchise closing the book. But horror franchises have a funny way of surviving… especially when the box office keeps ringing.

Right now, the film is tracking for a $60 million opening weekend, which could make this decision a lot easier for the studio. Money talks, and Ghostface has always known how to make an entrance.

What makes all of this even more interesting is how Scream 7 is being framed creatively. The movie is written and directed by Kevin Williamson, the screenwriter who launched the original Scream in 1996 and went on to write Scream 2 and Scream 4.

Having Williamson back at the helm gives this installment a strong full-circle energy, especially since it centers once again on Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott.

Campbell previously opened up about where Sidney is emotionally when we meet her in the new film. She said:

"It's a whole full circle story for Sidney. She's made the very brave choice to have children herself… She wants to live in this small town, have a family, and overcome her past. And of course, she's got great fear that'll come to visit her family. But you know she gets to sort of heal that wound."

Sidney has relocated to Indiana, trying to build a peaceful life away from the chaos. That peace doesn’t last long. A new Ghostface begins targeting her daughter, Tatum, pulling Sidney right back into the nightmare she’s spent decades surviving.

The film also makes some wild swings by bringing back two former Ghostface killers. Matthew Lillard returns as Stu Macher, and Scott Foley is back as Roman Bridger, despite Roman being very clearly shot in the head in Scream 3. If you’re going to sell something as the ultimate chapter, resurrecting past killers is certainly one way to do it.

The supporting cast includes Isabel May, Anna Camp, Mason Gooding, Jasmine Savoy Brown, McKenna Grace, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox, mixing franchise veterans with fresh blood.

That’s what makes this report about Scream 8 so interesting. On one hand, Scream 7 looks like a carefully crafted sendoff for Sidney Prescott. On the other, horror history tells us that no final girl story ever truly stays finished if audiences show up.

Scream 7 hits theaters on February 26.
