Sebastian Stan Has “Absolutely No Idea” What Happens in AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY; He's Never Seen a Full Script

Sebastian Stan, who returns to the MCU as Bucky Barnes in Avengers: Doomsday, has revealed that he never received a complete script for the massive Marvel movie.

Instead, Stan and his fellow cast members were given scattered pieces of the story while directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo kept the larger picture under wraps.

When asked what audiences should expect from Avengers: Doomsday, Stan admitted that he wasn’t exactly the best person to ask because Marvel didn’t give him enough information to spoil it even if he wanted to.

"Honestly, I have absolutely no idea because we didn't even have a script," he told French Sunday newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche.

"We were just shooting scattered scenes. It's a different way of working, continuous, constantly evolving. The producers didn't want us to read it in its entirety, to avoid journalists asking us questions."

That’s one way to keep Marvel spoilers from escaping. You can’t accidentally reveal the plot of a movie when you don’t know the plot of the movie.

The interview was conducted before the Cannes Film Festival in May, so Stan may have learned more about the story since then. Still, Marvel Studios has a long history of tightly controlling information surrounding its biggest projects, and Doomsday is exactly the kind of movie the studio wants to protect.

Stan is returning as Bucky following the events of Thunderbolts, where the character became part of the New Avengers alongside Yelena Belova and Red Guardian, played by Florence Pugh and David Harbour.

Exactly how the New Avengers fit into the larger Doomsday story remains unclear, though Bucky and his teammates have already appeared together in several ensemble moments from the trailers. They’re only one piece of a ridiculously huge Marvel crossover.

Robert Downey Jr. is taking on the role of Doctor Doom, with the New Avengers joining characters from the original X-Men films, Black Panther, Captain America, and The Fantastic Four as they come together against Victor Von Doom.

The latest Avengers: Doomsday trailer has also offered a few intriguing clues about what Doom is bringing to the story. There appears to be some serious history involving Victor, Sue Storm, and Reed Richards, and the footage reveals that Doom has lost everything he loved.

That tragedy will be a major part of what sends him down the destructive path that eventually puts him up against the Avengers and the rest of Marvel’s heroes.

Marvel isn’t ready to hand over all the answers yet, but the studio is set to re-release Avengers: Endgame in theaters on September 25, where additional breadcrumbs about the upcoming film’s story are expected to be revealed.
