Seth Rogen Calls 1993's SUPER MARIO BROS. Movie "One of the Worst Films Ever Made"
Seth Rogen, the actor who voices Donkey Kong in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, recently shared his thoughts on the original live-action Super Mario Bros. film adaptation from 1993. The actor calls it one of the worst films ever made! While talking to Variety, he said:
"When I was 11, I saw the original Mario Bros. movie and I was so excited. But it’s one of the worst films ever made. I was so disappointed. I think it made me realize that movies could be bad. That never occurred to me until that moment."
When talking about the recent animated film that he stars in, Rogen added: "It’s nice to know that 11-year-olds out there… won’t be disappointed in the same way that I was.”
I think Rogen is being too hard on that original Super Mario Bros. movie. That movie is so freakin’ weird and unique! I’ve never seen anything quite like it before. It did something very different. Yeah, it was not the best representation or adaptation of the game that it was based on, but it was still a trip!
When I saw that movie as a kid, I’ll admit, I was pretty confused by what I had just seen because it was nothing like the game. But it was fun to watch! Revisiting the film years later as an adult is fun because then you see how insane this movie really was!
I mean, the movie starred Bob Hoskins, John Leguizama, and Dennis Hopper as King Koopa! Then you’ve got all those crazy costumes, special effects, and settings. In the film, Mario and Luigi travel to another dimension to rescue a princess from the evil dictator King Koopa and stop him from taking over the world.
The film was a critical and commercial failure, grossing only $38.9 million at the box office from a reported $42 million budget and Nintendo ever attempted to make another feature film again… until now with The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
What did you think about the first Super Mario Bros. movie? Do you think it’s one of the worst films ever made?
