SHANG-CHI Star Simu Liu Teases Sequel Plans and Possible Involvement with AVENGERS: THE KANG DYNASTY
I enjoyed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. I liked that we finally got a fantasy martial arts film from Marvel Studios. I also thought that Simu Liu was pretty awesome in the role. He’s got some crazy impressive martial arts skills!
A sequel for the movie has already been confirmed, but Liu offered his thoughts on it and said that he’d made forty of these Shang Chi movies if he can! He told CB:
"I think I know as much as anyone else, right? There's going to be a sequel, I think that part was obvious but it was also made official. As far as when I think that's just a question of timing and how well my back holds up through the years. I'll make 40 of them if we can."
Of course, once you get in with Marvel and you get to play an awesome character in the MCU, you’d never want to let it go! Unless you’re Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. They seemed pretty eager to move on. But it’s great to see Liu so enthusiastic about the role!
He then went on to talk about Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which is being helmed by Shang Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton. He shared his excitement for Cretton landing the epic directing gig and also teased Shang-Chi’s involvement with it. When asked about it, he said:
"It feels incredible. I obviously learned about the news a little bit before the rest of the world did, but I freaked out. I sent him like forty texts in a row, all exclamation marks. I'm just so incredibly happy for him, he's so deserving of that spot. What makes him such a special filmmaker, and I've said this from the beginning even when we were premiering our movie, is his ability to make a $150 million movie really, really small, in the best possible way. I'm really looking forward to what he does on that even grander scale of The Avengers because I think it's easy to maybe get lost in the spectacle of what those movies can be, the vastness and the grandness of it, but if you can maintain the humanity and the human stories, I think that's what will make a movie memorable and special, and I think Destin's got it. I think he's got it and I think he deserves this so much. I'm so excited to get to work for him again."
Because of that last sentence, Liu was then asked if he was confirming his involvement in The Kang Dynasty, and he added: "I would think so...I would hope so. Don't take my word for it."
I’m sure that we’re going to see a lot of Marvel characters pop up in these next two Avengers event films! Everyone and anyone that is still alive and kicking in the MCU is sure to show up!
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is scheduled for release on May 2nd, 2025, and will arrive one year ahead of Avengers: Secret Wars on May 1, 2026.
