Shaquille O’Neal Says Marvel Studios Rejected His AVENGERS Dream Because He’s Too Famous
Shaquille O'Neal has four NBA championships, an MVP trophy, a Hall of Fame career, movies, TV appearances, and even a second life as DJ Diesel. But apparently, there was one thing even Shaq couldn't make happen, and that was becoming part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The basketball legend has revealed that he tried to land a role in an Avengers movie, only for Marvel Studios to turn him down for a pretty funny reason. Shaq is simply too recognizable.
O'Neal recently spoke with Variety while discussing his "Dunkman" league and opened up about his acting ambitions. While he's appeared in plenty of movies and television shows over the years, finding a role where audiences can forget they're looking at Shaq isn't exactly easy.
He explained: “I would love to do more action roles but we were told by top Hollywood executives that I’m too big, and what they mean by that is when I pop up on the screen everyone will go, ‘Oh, that’s Shaq!’ So, if I’m trying to play a doctor or anything, my character won’t be believable.”
It's a problem that very few actors have to deal with. O'Neal isn't just a famous athlete. He's a 7-foot-1 basketball icon with one of the most recognizable faces and personalities in sports. Put him in a lab coat and tell us he's a scientist studying gamma radiation, and we're still probably thinking, "Hey, Shaq's in a Marvel movie!"
Unfortunately for O'Neal, that recognition also kept him from fulfilling his longtime goal of joining the MCU. Shaq has been a vocal Marvel fan for years and actively campaigned for a chance to appear in one of Kevin Feige's movies.
According to O'Neal, Marvel liked him plenty, but the studio had the same concern about audiences immediately recognizing him.
O'Neal recalled: “I wanted to be in the ‘Avengers’ and they were like, ‘Shaq, we [frick]in’ love you and we’d love to put you in, but if your face pops up on screen people are going to go, ‘Hey, that’s Shaq!’ He said it truthfully, and I was like, alright… I guess my face is too bigtime.”
With Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars bringing together a massive collection of characters from Marvel's past and present, it sounds like we can cross Shaq off the potential surprise appearance list.
His action movie ambitions aren't dead, though. There's another major Hollywood star Shaq wants to share the screen with, Dwayne Johnson, and his motivation couldn't be simpler. “I want to do a movie with The Rock so I can beat him up.”
O'Neal certainly isn't a stranger to acting. He starred in Kazaam in 1996 before taking on the role of DC Comics hero John Henry Irons in 1997's Steel. Neither movie turned him into Hollywood's next major action star, but they've become memorable pieces of Shaq's wonderfully strange entertainment career.
He's also appeared as himself in a long list of movies, including Good Burger, He Got Game, Freddy Got Fingered, After the Sunset, Scary Movie 4, The House Bunny, Jack and Jill, Thunderstruck, The Lego Movie, What Men Want, and Scary Movie (2026).
O'Neal has also worked several times with Adam Sandler, appearing in Grown Ups 2, Blended, and Hubie Halloween. The two will team up again for Netflix's upcoming Grown Ups 3.
Of course, acting is just one small part of Shaq's career. He's a four-time NBA champion, three-time NBA Finals MVP, the 2000 NBA MVP, and the 1993 Rookie of the Year. During his NBA run, he played for the Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Boston Celtics.
These days, he's also a sports analyst on Inside the NBA alongside Ernie Johnson Jr., Charles Barkley, and Kenny "The Jet" Smith. With the NBA season still a few months away, O'Neal is currently traveling the world performing as DJ Diesel.
Shaq has got some much going on and so much money, he doesn’t really need The Avengers.
