Shawn Levy Says His REAL STEEL Spinoff Series "Is in Very Active and Promising Development"

At the beginning of this year, we reported that director Shawn Levy announced that Disney+ is in the early stages of developing a series adaptation based on the movie Real Steel, which may or may not continue the story. The film is set in the not-too-distant future where human boxers have been replaced by awesome giant fighting robots.

In the film, Hugh Jackman played a former boxer who reconnects with his estranged son while fixing up an old robot they find in a junkyard. They end up building that robot into a winning fighter named Camelot.

In a recent interview with Collider, Levy gave a little update on the series:

The series “Is in very active and promising development. I'm really excited about the ideas that we're exploring. But as you can tell from my cagey words, I can't yet tell you about the writer or timeline.”

This is the first mention he has made about the project having a writer, so this sounds like a step in the right direction! He also talked about being overprotective of the franchise, which is why it took so long to get the ball rolling on it. He explains:

“But I will say that we heard a lot of pitches. And I realized, over the course of those pitches, that I am fiercely protective of ‘Real Steel.’ I'd rather make no show than the wrong show. And I finally heard a take that takes the lore of the movie and does some really exciting things with it. I'm finally getting really excited about where we're headed.”

This movie was a really great family film, and I think there’s a lot of fun story to play with. Stay tuned for more updates on the series as it develops.
