Shawn Levy Says That While Photo Leaks Are a Bummer, It's Worth It to Shoot DEADPOOL 3 on Real Locations Versus Green Screens
Deadpool 3 is a momentous occasion for Marvel studios. It’s bringing the Merc with a Mouth to the MCU, as well as several beloved characters like Wolverine, Elektra, possibly Sabretooth and Gambit, and so many more that are rumored to appear. It will also be the first R-rated Marvel movie, and it will just be so much fun to bring this wild franchise to the Marvel Universe, but director Shawn Levy has another reason he’s stoked to be playing in this movie world, and that’s attributed to the practical effects he’s utilizing.
In a recent interview with Total Film Magazine (via /Film), Levy talked about the film's set photo leaks, saying they’re just a small price to pay for the overall quality of what’s he’s making:
"It bums me out that photos have leaked online. But this is the price we pay for committing to real locations. I made a decision very early in prep that even though Deadpool is now in the MCU, I didn't want another Marvel movie shot on a green screen stage with digital set extensions."
Anyone who's ever shot a film or TV series on location can relate to the lack of control that comes with the process, whether it's photo leaks, uncontrollable weather, or some other issue. But when it came to the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman big screen blockbuster, Levy felt they deserved the best:
"Deadpool and Wolverine are iconic Marvel characters; more specifically, iconic Marvel-of-the-Fox-era characters. We're not going to pretend: 'Oh, we snap our fingers, and suddenly that Fox legacy doesn't exist, and it shaped a lot of what we now know as the MCU.' Fox also shaped Ryan's career, Hugh's career and my career. So there's a lot of history there, and there's a lot of Marvel history at Fox. And certainly that's a part of our storytelling."
I know this movie will pay homage to what has been made in the past that fans love, and it will build on that in fun new ways. I can’t wait to see what Levy does with these fan-favorite characters! Deadpool 3 is set to hit theaters on May 3, 2024.
