SHERLOCK Producer Says "There Is a Future" for the Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman Series

The fantastic BBC Sherlock series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman could make a comeback someday according to producer Sue Vertue.

Sherlock had a strong four-season run and a Christmas Special, and it ended in 2017. Both Cumberbatch, who played Sherlock, and Freeman, who played John Watson, got incredibly busy and it was just going to be too hard to get the gang back together.

When asked about the possible future of the show, Vertue told Deadline: "We always say never say never. I've still got the set in storage somewhere, which is probably rotten, to be honest with you. It's just getting everybody aligned, it's getting the actors to want to do it."

"We love that show and there is a future for it. One day. Maybe. If everyone wants to do it.”

Mark Gatiss, who co-created the show with Steven Moffat, has previously teased that a movie could happen someday, saying: "We'd like to make a film but trying to get everyone together is very difficult. You'll have to ask Benedict [Cumberbatch] and Martin [Freeman]."

A couple of years ago, Moffat said he was ready to move on Season 5 saying he would “start writing Sherlock tomorrow” if the actors agreed to return. He then asked them to come back, saying: "They're on to bigger and better things but, Martin and Benedict, 'please come back?'“

Moffat seems to have a story for Season 5 that he’s really excited and happy about. Moffatt went on to say: "Rather excitingly, Mark (Gatiss) and I, for no particular reason, just started plotting out what we could do in the future.

“We plotted out the whole of series four and five. The ideas we had that day, I thought were the best we've ever had. So we have got plans – but our plans don't tend to be 'Let's blow up the world or cast the most famous person in the world', they tend to be 'What exciting twists and turns can we add to this?' and I think we've got some crackers!"

It would be great to see Cumberbatch and Martin return for at least one more Sherlock adventure. It’s good to know that there are some people involved with the series who haven’t given up on a possible return.
