Simon Kinberg Explains His Scrapped Boba Fett STAR WARS Movie Was "Tonally Like LOGAN"
Several years ago, Star Wars Rebels co-creator Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past) was brought on board by Lucasfilm to develop a Boba Fett movie. This was long before The Mandalorian came into the picture, and Josh Trank (Chronicle) was set to direct this version of the Boba Fett film.
The project fell apart after Trank’s Fantastic Four movie bombed at the box office and Lucasfilm removed him from the project.
During a recent interview with Polygon, Kinberg was asked about his work on the Boba Fett project and he offered some details on what he was looking to do with the film. He compared the project to 2017's Logan in terms of tone and look. He also explained what his role at Lucasfilm ultimately turned into:
"Tonally like Logan. On the edge of R-rated, though I don't think you'd have a Star Wars movie that could be R-rated. But at any rate, I think over time, my role morphed as a friend of the court. And so it ranged from being a consultant on the movies, give thoughts, notes, sometimes actual pages for scripts, and obviously co-creating Star Wars Rebels and really staying with that show that I loved. Part of what was so exciting about Rebels was that we were getting to do something that those movies I just mentioned didn't entirely do, which is create a brand-new set of characters."
Logan director James Mangold was then later hired by Lucasfilm to develop a Boba Fett movie, but that project never ended up moving forward either. Lucasfilm obviously liked the idea of a Logan-style Boba Fett movie, but I guess it was just never meant to be.
Boba Fett ended up being reintroduced to the Star Wars universe in The Mandalorian, which led to his own series, The Book of Boba Fett, which should’ve been so much better than it was.
