Some Shots in the SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY Trailer Reference Other Harrison Ford Movies
We've all completely dissected the Solo: A Star Wars Story trailers by now, but thanks to very observant internet users we're learning about several connections the movie has to previous films starring Harrison Ford. We've also shown you more than 80 screen shots from the movie, but two of them seem to stand out as very familiar.
The first reference comes from redditor A_Navigator. This one isn't framed up exactly the same way, but there is no denying it feels very familiar. In the sequence when Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) is facing off against a strange masked bounty hunter-looking character armed with some kind of "space spear," you see him unsnap his holster in preparation for battle. This is very reminiscent of another face-off involving one Dr. Indiana Jones and a swordsman in Raiders of the Lost Ark. We don't know how exactly Solo's showdown will play out yet, but it wouldn't be too surprising if it is similar to Indiana Jones' outcome. Someone even made a gif depicting just how similar the shot is (no pun intended).
The second shot is much more precise and also happens to connect Star Wars creator George Lucas and Harrison Ford to the Solo film. During a speeder chase sequence in the Solo trailer, a shot is taken from the front looking in at Solo behind the wheel with Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke) sitting by his side. It seems pretty straight forward, but this shot is a near carbon copy of a shot of pre-Star Wars Harrison Ford behind the wheel in a scene from a little movie written and directed by George Lucas, American Graffiti. Fun fact, Solo: A Star Wars Story director Ron Howard also starred in American Graffiti.
These are some pretty fun easter eggs and I'm sure there are a lot more that were not included in the trailer. I'm not sure if Howard is adding these shots to make this Solo movie feel more familiar or are they mere homages to other Harrison Ford movies? Who knows, maybe we'll find out in May when Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on May 25.
