Sony Chief Calls SPIDER MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Surprising and Terrific After Watching Early Footage

The next chapter of Tom Holland’s wall-crawler is getting closer, and the person at the very top of Sony Pictures sounds excited about what he has seen so far.

Tom Rothman, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures, recently talked about the upcoming Spider Man: Brand New Day and offered an encouraging update after watching early material from the film.

Rothman is the decision maker who controls whether Sony continues sharing the character with Marvel Studios, and he also made some pretty terriby creative choices over the course of his career.

The partnership between the studios has had a complicated history. It began in 2015 when Holland was introduced as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War. From there, the actor swung through Spider Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider Man: Far From Home. Then everything briefly collapsed.

In 2019, Sony and Disney failed to agree on new terms, and plans moved forward for a third Spider Man movie without Marvel Studios involved. Fans were furious, the internet erupted, and even the Russo Bros. publicly pushed both sides to fix the situation.

Holland personally reached out to Disney CEO Bob Iger, and a new agreement eventually brought the web-slinger back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That deal remains intact as Brand New Day heads toward theaters this summer, and Rothman was asked directly whether he has seen anything from the movie yet.

“We have not seen a cut yet, I have seen all the dailies. I think it’s going to be one of the most surprising and terrific movies – as a movie – an incredible Spider Man movie, and Destin has done a tremendous job, tremendous!”

The Destin he refers to is director Destin Daniel Cretton, best known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. His involvement signaled early on that Sony and Marvel wanted a fresh creative direction after the massive multiverse spectacle of Spider Man: No Way Home.

Rothman was also asked whether this might be Holland’s final outing as Peter Parker. His response was short and playful. “Next time Tom is on the line, ask him!”

That answer leaves plenty of room for speculation. Holland himself has hinted in past interviews that he may not want to play Spider Man forever, and he has spoken openly about the idea of eventually passing the mask to Miles Morales.

With five years now separating No Way Home and Brand New Day, the future of the character beyond this film remains an open question.

Miles Morales continues to hover over every Spider Man conversation. Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin recently said he would love the opportunity to bring Miles to life in live action.

“I think Miles represents something bigger than myself, bigger than most people,” McLaughlin said. “Also being from New York, and seeing the Spider Verse story, it’s really connected with me.”

McLaughlin joins a very long list of actors hoping to land the role. Miles is traditionally written as Afro-Latino and much younger than McLaughlin’s current age, so casting that part will require careful thought when the time finally comes.

For now, all attention stays on Peter Parker and Spider Man: Brand New Day. Rothman’s glowing reaction does not reveal story details or surprises, but it does suggest confidence from the highest level of the studio. After years of waiting, fans are finally close to seeing what comes next for Holland’s version of the hero.
