Sony Eyes DON'T BREATHE Director For GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Sequel

David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was considered something of a disappointment for Sony Pictures, which put the idea of a sequel in jeopardy. But after five years, it seems as if the studio is finally getting serious about bringing hacker Lisbeth Salander for more big screen adventures. Variety reports that Sony Pictures is eyeing Don't Breathe director Fede Alvarez to direct the sequel, which is written by Steven Knight and based on the fourth book in the Millennium series, which was written after original author Stieg Larsson's death.

In the novel, Salander teamed up with journalist Mikael Blomkvist to enter a world of a ruthless underworld of spies, cybercriminals, and government operatives — some willing to kill to protect their secrets.

So it sounds like the two main characters are coming back, and we'll have to wait and see if stars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig will end up returning to reprise those roles. There was some confusion about a sequel when the studio acquired the rights to the book last year, with discussions apparently taking place with Alicia Vikander to take over the role of Lisbeth Salander, but conflicting reports around the same time stated that the two stars might indeed return after all.

Alvarez is certainly a fascinating choice to continue this franchise, so I'll be keeping a close eye on this one. I wonder if it will have any effect on his superhero noir movie Incognito.
