Sony Pictures Moves Forward with Its JACKPOT Marvel Movie with Writer Marc Guggenheim

A couple of years ago it was reported that Sony Pictures was looking to develop Marvel film based on the character Jackpot. Well, according to Deadline, the studio has hired Marc Guggenheim (Arrow, The Flash, Trollhunters) to write the script. He has also actually written some of the issues of the Jackpot comic series, so he seems like a good person for the job!

For those of you not familiar with the character Jackpot, she's a registered hero with The Initiative who fights crime in New York City. She has superhuman strength, durability, and endurance. Oh, and she’s also a mother.

Jackpot, a.k.a. Sara Ehret, was created by Dan Slott and Phil Jimenez, and she first appeared in the Free Comic Book Day 2007 comic book. Here's a little background on the character:

Sara Ehret is a lab assistant at Phelcorps Labs, a subsidiary of Oscorp. She was working on a form of gene therapy, a retrovirus called Lot 777, that would hopefully cure Parkinson's Disease. While studying a sample of Lot 777, Sara accidentally infected herself with the retrovirus and fell into a coma. She was pregnant at the time and spent four months comatose. Luckily Sara got out of her coma and she gave birth to a daughter. Not much later, Sara and her husband Scott were walking with their infant daughter, Madeline, when Spider-Man came crashing out of the side of a building, caught in the arms of a super-villain. With the debris falling down around them, Sara saved her family by holding a piece of the building's wall above their head while Spider-Man continued his pursuit of the criminal. She then noticed she had superpowers and wanted to start a career as a super-hero.

This is a fun character that could actually make for a solid film if done right. It was also recently reported that the studio might be developing a Madame Web movie with S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders, Jessica Jones) developing it. It was also previously reported that the studio is developing Silk and Nightwatch films.

Of course, the other Marvel projects coming from Sony in the near future include Venom 2, Morbius, and Spider-Man 3.

What do you think about Sony Pictures pressing forward on developing this Jackpot movie?
