Sony Pictures Targets 2027 Release for Its HORIZON ZERO DAWN Movie
It looks like Sony Pictures is pushing ahead with its long-awaited Horizon Zero Dawn movie adaptation — and if everything goes according to plan, we’ll be heading back into Aloy’s world on the big screen in 2027.
Recent legal documents have revealed that Sony is quietly moving the project forward. The studio is currently in a legal dispute with Chinese tech giant Tencent over Light of Motiram, which Sony claims is a direct clone of its acclaimed sci-fi RPG franchise.
In those same filings, PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash gave fans a major update on the film’s development, saying the studio “already [has] a working script, and [is] actively searching for a director, with the goal of shooting the picture in 2026 and releasing it in 2027.”
Qizilbash also emphasized that the game’s iconic protagonist, Aloy, will be front and center in the film, describing her as “a key icon in the anticipated film” and important “to the flywheel of franchise building.”
Horizon Zero Dawn was originally in development as a Netflix series before things went off the rails. The project was scrapped in 2024 after intended co-showrunner Steven Blackman, best known for The Umbrella Academy, was accused of abuse and misconduct, leading Netflix to quietly drop the adaptation.
Sony’s commitment to expanding its PlayStation universe on screen hasn’t slowed down. With The Last of Us finding huge success on HBO, the studio continues to develop more live-action adaptations of its biggest titles, including God of War, Ghost of Tsushima (also known as Yotei in Japan), and Helldivers.
If Sony hits its target, Horizon will arrive in 2027, but it might have some stiff competition. Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda movie is locked in for a May 7, 2027 release. Fans might remember that Horizon Zero Dawn originally launched in 2017, only to be completely overshadowed by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild just days later. It would be both ironic and funny if history repeated itself once again.
For now, though, it’s exciting to know Aloy’s world of towering machines and post-apocalyptic wonder is officially headed for theaters. Here’s hoping Sony can deliver a cinematic experience worthy of one of gaming’s most visually stunning franchises.
