Sophie Turner Confirmed as Lara Croft as Prime Video’s TOMB RAIDER Series Finally Heads into Production
It’s finally happening. Prime Video’s long-awaited Tomb Raider series is officially heading into production, and the iconic role of Lara Croft has been locked in. Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones) is confirmed to step into the boots of the globe-trotting adventurer.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who has been attached since the beginning, remains creator, writer, and executive producer. Now she’ll share showrunning duties with Chad Hodge, the mind behind Wayward Pines, Good Behavior, and The Playboy Club.
Production is set to begin January 19, exactly three years after news first broke that Waller-Bridge was developing the project under her deal with Amazon MGM Studios.
Joining the creative team is Jonathan Van Tulleken (Shōgun, Dope Thief) who will direct and executive produce. The series comes from Amazon MGM Studios, Story Kitchen, and Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind the legendary video game franchise.
Waller-Bridge said in a statement: “I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team. It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving.
“Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out… Croft is coming…”
Turner, who has recently starred in the limited series Joan and the thriller Trust, will also be seen in the upcoming series The Dreadful. She shared her own excitement about taking on the role:
“I am thrilled beyond measure, to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got.
“They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”
Head of Global Television at Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios Vernon Sanders praised the casting and vision for the series:
“Lara Croft is one of the most recognizable and iconic video game characters of all time. We are thrilled to have the wonderfully talented Sophie Turner bring this character to life who is defined by her courage, strength, and unshakable resolve.
“Led by the brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge, this series will honor the beloved Tomb Raider legacy while delivering fresh adventures to fans worldwide.”
The Tomb Raider franchise has long been one of gaming’s most iconic properties, with Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander bringing Lara Croft to the big screen in the past. Now, with Turner in the lead and Waller-Bridge steering the ship, Prime Video looks ready to deliver a bold new chapter in Croft’s legendary adventures.
Production kicks off in January, and fans are one step closer to seeing Lara Croft return in a big way.
