Chris MIller Says SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE Is Similar to EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE

From everything that I’ve seen and read about Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, it seems like the creative team is going to deliver another incredible, mind-blowing, and visually stunning animated movie! Now today, we’ve learned some new details regarding what’s at the heart of the story that this sequel is going to tell, and it’s explained how it’s similar to Everything Everywhere All At Once.

While the movie is going to go bigger and crazier, the creative team wants to make sure that the audiences care about the characters and the connection that the heroes have with each other. So, producer Amy Pascal recently explained in an interview with Empire that this movie is a love story between Miles (Shameik Moore) and Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld). She explained:

“The danger with a sequel is to go bigger just for bigger’s sake. But all the bells and whistles are no good unless you care. This movie is a love story between Miles and Gwen.”

Co-director Kemp Powers goes on to reveal some of how that dynamic will play out because Gwen has apparently been hanging out a lot with Daniel Kaluuya’s Hobie Brown, a.k.a. Spider-Punk, in New London. Power shared:

“There’s jealousy there. When Miles meets Gwen again, she’s not wearing her ballet shoes; she’s wearing Converse Chuck Taylors, which Spider-Punk gave her. Miles starts wondering, ‘How close are these two?’”

That’s definitely going to make for an interesting dynamic. Writer and producer Chris Miller compared the film to Everything Everywhere All At Once, saying:

“With our movies, it’s similar to what the Daniels did in Everything Everywhere All At Once. You can have all the spectacle and action and visual insanity, but it has to be focused on an emotional journey you feel in your heart.”

It sounds like they’ve made a sequel that fans are going to love. Sequels are hard, and they usually aren’t as good as the first film. There are exceptions, though, and maybe this will be one of them! Maybe this sequel will end up being better than the first movie.

The film follows Miles Morales as Brooklyn’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, “plunged into the multiverse where he joins forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-folks to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.”

After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, “Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.”

The film will consist of 240 characters that will be swinging around in this movie, and the cast also includes, Brian Tyree Henry as Miles’ dad Jefferson Davis; Luna Lauren Velez as Miles’ mom Rio Morales; Issa Rae as Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman; Jorma Taccone as Vulture; Rachel Dratch; Shea Whigham; Greta Lee; and Jason Schwartzman as Spot.

The movie is being directed and produced by Justin K. Thompson, Joaquim Dos Santos, and Kemp Powers.

The movie is set to be released on June 2nd, 2023! There’s also a third installment, Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse, already dated for March 29th, 2024.
