SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Producer Amy Pascal Says a New Trilogy Is the Dream, but They're Taking It "One Movie at a Time"
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is sure to be one of Marvel's biggest upcoming movies, and fans are already wondering what comes next for Tom Holland's Peter Parker after he returns to the big screen.
While Marvel Studios and Sony haven't revealed any long-term plans beyond the next film, producer Amy Pascal has offered a little insight into what she'd love to see happen.
Speaking with SFX Magazine, Pascal explained that working alongside Marvel Studios has completely changed what Spider-Man stories can look like on screen thanks to the character's place in the wider MCU.
"Ever since we’ve been making Spider-Man movies with Marvel and the MCU, it has opened up a wealth of opportunity for us," she said. "Because in the comics, he does interact with all these characters. So that's been a wonderful opportunity."
That bigger sandbox has already paid off in a big way. Holland's Spider-Man has crossed paths with heroes like Iron Man, Doctor Strange, and the Avengers, and Brand New Day looks ready to continue that trend with even more unexpected team-ups with The Punisher and Hulk.
As for whether this movie is the beginning of another trilogy, Pascal admits that's certainly something she'd love to see happen. She's also making it clear that nothing is guaranteed.
"I never want to be so presumptuous as to say anything is going to be a trilogy or more than one. That would be my dream, of course, but you never know," she added. "Because the truth is that the rule that we set for ourselves is to take it one movie at a time. It's important to us that you don't have to see one movie to see the other movie."
It's a practical approach, especially considering how much the entertainment landscape can change between releases. Still, hearing Pascal call another trilogy her "dream" is sure to get Spider-Man fans excited about the possibilities if Brand New Day connects with audiences in a huge way.
The upcoming film also finds Peter Parker in a completely different place than we've ever seen before. At the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter sacrificed his entire personal life so the world would forget he ever existed.
That means MJ, played by Zendaya, and Ned, played by Jacob Batalon, no longer remember him, leaving Peter truly on his own.
This time around, he'll be facing a mystery villain while teaming up with Jon Bernthal's Punisher and Mark Ruffalo's Hulk, which promises a very different dynamic than we've seen in previous Spider-Man movies.
Whether Spider-Man: Brand New Day kicks off another trilogy or simply stands as its own adventure remains to be seen. Either way, it sounds like Pascal and the creative team are focused on making each movie work on its own first.
If they pull that off and audiences keep showing up, there's every reason to think Peter Parker's next chapter could stretch well beyond just one more movie.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters in on July 31.
