SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY: Tom Holland Shoots Down Jean Grey Rumors as First Look at Tombstone Arrives
One of the biggest fan theories surrounding Spider-Man: Brand New Day may have just taken a major hit. Tom Holland has addressed the speculation that Jean Grey will appear in the movie, offering a surprisingly straightforward answer that seems to put the rumors to rest… if you believe him.
At the same time, newly released footage has also delivered fans their first proper look at Tombstone in action, teasing another classic comic-inspired moment for the wall-crawler.
Ever since Sadie Sink joined the cast, Marvel fans have been trying to figure out who she's playing. One of the most popular theories has been that she'll make her MCU debut as Jean Grey, with the Department of Damage Control manipulating her powers before she turns her anger toward Peter Parker by unleashing The Hulk on him after believing he's working alongside the agency.
Holland, however, doesn't seem to think fans are on the right track. When asked about the Jean Grey rumors, the actor responded: "[Jean Grey] is not in this movie, but it would be pretty cool."
It's a pretty definitive statement, though Marvel fans know better than to completely rule anything out. Actors have become masters at protecting spoilers, so there's always the possibility Holland is simply helping preserve one of the movie's biggest surprises.
Still, only about 35 minutes of Spider-Man: Brand New Day have been screened for members of the press, and Marvel continues to keep Sink's role under wraps.
While the mystery surrounding the movie's main villain remains intact, the latest footage also offers fans their first real look at Tombstone, played by Marvin Jones III, also known as Krondon.
Many fans have speculated that Tombstone could emerge as the film's primary antagonist, especially if Mayor Wilson Fisk's downfall in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 creates a power vacuum in New York's criminal underworld.
With Peter Parker back to operating as a street-level hero and Matt Murdock reportedly behind bars, Lonnie Lincoln would certainly be in a position to make a move.
That said, the new footage hints that Tombstone may instead be one of several villains Spider-Man encounters during an opening montage inspired by classic comic book covers.
One sequence recreates the iconic cover of Spectacular Spider-Man #142, with Tombstone lifting a beaten Spider-Man high above the streets of New York. It's the first time fans have seen the character outside of promotional artwork, and he already looks like he'll be a brutal opponent for Peter.
Whether that's the extent of Tombstone's role or just the beginning of something bigger remains one of the many mysteries surrounding Spider-Man: Brand New Day as Marvel continues to keep fans guessing.
