SPIDER-MAN Universe Film EL MUERTO Back in Development Without Bad Bunny

Two years ago, it was announced that an El Muerto movie was being made as part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe with the actor and musician Bad Bunny attached to star. Jonás Cuarón was set to direct, and he script for the movie was being written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. Then, seven months ago, it was announced that the film was pulled from Sony’s release schedule, and one week later there was news that Sony was moving forward with the film without Bad Bunny in the title role. The singer reportedly had to pull out of the project because of his touring schedule, but he has been very vocal about his disappointment.

At the time, it was from a lesser-known source that we learned Sony was still wanting to press forward, but a new report has confirmed the news.

In a recent report from Variety detailing all the Sony Marvel projects that are currently in the works, we learned that the El Muerto movie is in deed back in business. It was verified in a small mention at the end of the article, which states:

At CinemaCon 2022, the studio brought Bad Bunny onstage to announce “El Muerto,” which would follow a superhuman luchador to be played by the singer. But his conflicting tour and script revisions now have the project back in development — without a star on the books.

So we can infer from that bit that the movie is moving forward without a star attached quite yet, and the script has been given revisions. It went on to say:

Whether or not “El Muerto” comes to fruition, its stand-alone nature is the model that Sony is applying to comic book films. Amid unease that cinematic universes may have grown too expansive, Sony looks to woo viewers via contained narratives — you know, the way blockbusters used to do.

So it’s still tentative, probably depending on the right people becoming attached to the project, but it’s good to know that Sony isn’t looking to just churn out movies at all cost, and they will be made under the right circumstances. Do you want this movie to be made at all? Who do you think could star?
