STAR TREK Fans Will Attempt a World Record Vulcan Salute for the Franchise’s 60th Anniversary
The Star Trek franchise is turning 60, and apparently the logical way to celebrate six decades of boldly going where no one has gone before is to get a ridiculous number of people together and throw up the Vulcan Salute.
Star Trek celebrates its 60th anniversary on September 8, exactly six decades after the original series premiered in 1966. Paramount is marking Star Trek Day with events around the world, including theatrical screenings, special game-show episodes, collectibles, and a Guinness World Record attempt that feels perfectly suited to the occasion.
The record attempt will take place at London’s Science Museum, where fans will gather to try to set the Guinness World Record for the most people performing the Vulcan Salute.
The attempt is part of the museum’s Star Trek Lates after-hours event, which also gives fans the chance to explore the Star Trek Warp Trail and check out costumes and props from the franchise.
Fans who can’t make it to London aren’t completely left out, either. Fans around the world will be able to participate online and add their Vulcan Salutes to the celebration.
Of course, one giant “Live Long and Prosper” isn’t the only thing happening for Star Trek Day. In the U.S., 750 theaters will screen classic Star Trek movies in 4K from September 4 through September 8.
Each movie will be paired with a curated episode of Star Trek: The Original Series, giving fans a pretty great excuse to spend several days revisiting some of the franchise’s best adventures on the big screen.
The celebration kicks off Friday, September 4, with Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition paired with “The Changeling.”
Saturday, September 5 brings Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan – The Director’s Cut alongside “Space Seed,” the original Khan episode that makes for an especially fitting double feature.
On Sunday, September 6, fans can catch Star Trek III: The Search for Spock with “Amok Time,” followed on Monday, September 7 by Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and “The City on the Edge of Forever.”
Then September 8 goes all-in with a Star Trek Day marathon featuring all four movie-and-episode pairings.
The U.S. screenings will offer U.S.S. Enterprise popcorn buckets, because apparently popcorn tastes better when you’re eating it out of a starship.
CBS is getting in on the 60th anniversary fun as well. Special Star Trek-themed episodes of Let’s Make a Deal and The Price Is Right will air September 8 and stream on Paramount+.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds stars Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck will make appearances, with Peck being an especially appropriate guest considering he currently plays Spock.
Between the Vulcan Salute world record attempt, classic movies returning to theaters, beloved episodes of The Original Series, game-show appearances, collectibles, and the current season of Strange New Worlds, there are plenty of ways for fans to mark the franchise’s 60th anniversary.
Sixty years after the U.S.S. Enterprise first hit television screens, Star Trek still has fans ready to show up for it. On September 8, quite a few of them will be doing it with their fingers split into a familiar V.
