STAR WARS Is Getting a New Holiday Special on Disney+ with LEGO

It looks like we’ll be getting a new Star Wars holiday special, but it won’t be the kind of holiday special that fans would expect. The special will be an animated LEGO project.

Disney brings us the news of The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, which is set to arrive on Disney+ on November 17th, which is the same day the original Star Wars Holiday Special premiered on CBS.

The upcoming holiday special reunites LEGO versions of Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewie, Rose and the droids for a joyous feast on Life Day, which is the holiday first introduced in the 1978 special. Here’s the synopsis for The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special:

Directly following the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Rey leaves her friends to prepare for Life Day as she sets off on a new adventure with BB-8 to gain a deeper knowledge of the Force. At a mysterious Jedi Temple, she is hurled into a cross-timeline adventure through beloved moments in Star Wars cinematic history, coming into contact with Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Yoda, Obi-Wan and other iconic heroes and villains from all nine Skywalker saga films. But will she make it back in time for the Life Day feast and learn the true meaning of holiday spirit?

The new LEGO special is the first to debut on Disney+ and “will continue the rich legacy of collaboration between Lucasfilm and LEGO—playful adventures told in the endearingly irreverent way that only LEGO Star Wars co-branded content can.”

It’s explained that there will be plenty of nods to the original special, according to executive producer Josh Rimes. "We wanted to give a wink and a nod to the original. It's a celebration of the saga. A lot of characters will be interacting with different characters and perhaps even different versions of themselves at different ages."

Rimes when on to say that "Life Day was an easy sell with Lego and Star Wars because it gives you the license to be a little more playful and comedic.”

The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special was directed by Ken Cunningham and written by David Shayne, who is also co-executive producer. James Waugh, Josh Rimes, Jason Cosler, Jacqui Lopez, Jill Wilfert, and Keith Malone are executive producers.

I’ll probably watch it, but after The Rise of Skywalker, I can’t say I have much interest in seeing any of these newer Star Wars characters again.

The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau previously said he would love to make a new Star Wars holiday special; it’s a shame that Disney+ didn’t give him the opportunity. That’s something I would have been interested in watching.
