STAR WARS: MAUL – SHADOW LORD Director Says Maul’s Timeline “Isn’t Necessarily a Straight Line”
It’s awesome to see Darth Maul step back into the spotlight, and Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is finally giving the iconic villain his own series to command.
Set after The Clone Wars, the show digs into a chapter of Maul’s life that fans haven’t fully explored on screen. And even though we already know parts of where his story goes in Solo: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars Rebels, the creative team says don’t expect a straight path getting there.
When the series was discussed with supervising director Brad Rau, writer Matt Michnovetz, and executive producer Athena Yvette Portillo, it became clear that familiarity with Maul’s future doesn’t mean the journey will feel predictable.
"That's a wait and see for me, that's a wait and see," says Portillo, with Rau explaining: "I will say, when we approach these kinds of stories where you know a certain character's end, it's not necessarily a straight line.
“So, we wanted to make sure that we are making surprising bobs and weaves in a storyline that the fans are not expecting. Ideally, that's what we're doing. Also, there's a lot of new characters you've never seen before, and you don't know their fates and their destiny, and that's a big part of the story as well."
We may know where Maul ends up, but how he gets there could take some wild detours. The introduction of new characters is a big part of that, including Wagner Moura as the lawman Lawson and Richard Ayoade as his droid companion, Two-Boots. Their presence adds fresh energy to a story rooted in familiar territory.
Still, this is Maul’s show, and putting him front and center wasn’t exactly easy. "It was a tall order. It was very hard in all aspects, but mainly in the narrative was the hardest," says Portillo.
For a character who has mostly operated as a supporting force in The Clone Wars and Rebels, shifting him into a leading role required a different approach. The team wanted to make sure new viewers could jump in without feeling lost, while longtime fans still get the deeper connections they love.
"One thing we wanted to make sure we did, though, is create a new story and a new adventure in this time period, in his journey, that viewers didn't have to know anything about the character or about Star Wars going in," says Michnovetz.
"If you're a fan and you know that, that's great. It's enhanced viewing. It's fantastic. We're true to all of it, believe me, it's baked in. But, we did want to create a no barrier to entry story that you just go in, you understand.
Here's a guy who's got some issues with some people, he's out for revenge, and this is what he wants to do. He wants his pound of flesh, and he's determined to get it at all costs."
That stripped-down motivation is part of what makes Maul so compelling. He’s driven, dangerous, and easy to understand even when he’s operating in the shadows of a much larger galaxy.
It also helps explain why fans still can’t get enough of him. When the series was revealed at Star Wars Celebration 2025, the reaction was huge, and the creators have a pretty good idea why.
"He brings a level of mystery to the table," says Portillo of why Maul provokes such a reaction. "Maul, to me, is like my Boba Fett growing up. I wanted to know more about Boba Fett.
“There was something threatening about him. He didn't say anything the first time you see him. Maul at least said some stuff in Phantom Menace. Even his appearance is really cool."
"He's relatable and he's charismatic, so to add that to the mysterious nature of him, and he's fascinating to watch," adds Michnovetz.
That mix of menace and magnetism is exactly what Shadow Lord seems ready to lean into. It isn’t just about filling in timeline gaps, it’s about giving Maul a story that stands on its own while still connecting to the larger saga.
Fans can dive into this new chapter when Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord premieres on April 6 on Disney+. If the creative team delivers on those unexpected turns, this could end up being one of the coolest deep dives into a Star Wars character we’ve seen in a long time.
