STAR WARS: MAUL - SHADOW LORD Season 2 Officially in Development at Lucasfilm!
The next chapter of Star Wars animation is about to kick off, and it’s putting one of the franchise’s most relentless villains front and center. Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord arrives next week, finally giving the iconic Zabrak his own spotlight.
But, before the first season even premieres, there’s already word that this story isn’t stopping anytime soon. Season 2 is officially on the way, which feels pretty fitting for a character who has made a career out of refusing to stay down.
According to Dave Filoni, co-president of Lucasfilm, development on a second season is already in motion. The confirmation came as part of a deep dive into Maul’s long and chaotic history.
Filoni didn’t share specifics on a release window, but these Star Wars animated shows tend to stick around for more than just a single run, especially when there’s so much story left to explore.
And there’s a lot of ground to cover. Maul – Shadow Lord is set shortly after the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, placing it in that massive, largely unexplored stretch of time during the Empire’s rise.
That gap spans nearly two decades, giving the series room to track Maul’s evolution from a surviving Sith into the criminal mastermind fans later see in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and eventually the unstable, revenge-obsessed figure lurking in Star Wars Rebels.
Executive producer Athena Yvette Portillo previously hinted that the future of the series depended on a few moving pieces within Lucasfilm’s broader animation slate. She explained:
“We have other things in development and in progress, not necessarily related to the show. So again, it all depends on whether the fans really do want another season, and then we’re all for it.”
The thing is, the Fans haven’t even had a chance to watch it yet! So, Lucasfilm is just super confident in what this project is going to deliver.
At the moment, Maul – Shadow Lord stands as the only officially announced animated Star Wars series currently in production, which could mean Lucasfilm is putting extra focus on making this one the best it can be. Whether that also means a quicker turnaround for Season 2 remains to be seen.
For a character defined by survival, reinvention, and unfinished business, knowing that we are getting another season is exciting! Maul has always existed in the shadows of bigger stories, popping up at key moments to leave his mark.
Now he finally gets the space to take control of his own narrative, and it sounds like that journey is just getting started.
Season 1 of Maul – Shadow Lordbegins streaming on Disney+ on April 6.
