STAR WARS: MAUL – SHADOW LORD Director Teases Maul’s REBELS Death Might Not Be Final
With Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord digging deeper into Darth Maul’s past, a new tease from the show’s director has sparked fresh speculation that Maul’s fate isn’t as locked in as we once believed.
In Star Wars Rebels, Maul’s story seemingly reaches its end in a final duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine. It’s a poetic full-circle moment, especially considering Kenobi first struck him down back in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. That earlier “death” didn’t stick, and now fans are wondering if history could repeat itself.
Supervising director Brad Rau isn’t exactly shutting down the idea. When asked about Maul’s potential return, he kept things cryptic, saying, "You never know. We're just focusing on this one time period right now."
That comment is enough to get longtime Star Wars fans thinking. After all, Maul surviving the impossible is kind of his thing.
Rau also hinted that Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord won’t just be a straight path toward a known ending. Even if audiences know where Maul eventually ends up, the journey there might still throw some curveballs.
"I will say, when we approach these kinds of stories where you know a certain character's end, it's not necessarily a straight line," he explained.
"So, we wanted to make sure that we are making surprising bobs and weaves in a storyline that the fans are not expecting. Ideally, that's what we're doing. Also, there's a lot of new characters you've never seen before, and you don't know their fates and their destiny, and that's a big part of the story as well."
The series has been exploring Maul’s efforts to rebuild his power following the fall of the Shadow Collective, pulling him back into the criminal underworld while introducing new players like the Twi’lek apprentice Devon Izara. It’s a darker, more calculated version of Maul, one that’s less about rage and more about control.
Fans are clearly loving it. The show has quickly become one of the highest-rated Star Wars projects to date, with strong reactions across the board. It’s not just revisiting a familiar character, it’s expanding him in ways that feel fresh and unpredictable.
Even knowing how things play out in Rebels and Solo: A Star Wars Story, this series is proving there’s still plenty of story left to tell, and if Rau’s comments are anything to go by, maybe even more beyond that.
For now, Lucasfilm is keeping its focus on this chapter of Maul’s life. But it’s hard not to wonder if the former Sith Lord has one more comeback in him.
