STAR WARS Sets Up Ahsoka's First Reunion With Rotta the Hutt Since THE CLONE WARS
When Ahsoka Tano first appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars back in 2008, few fans could have predicted just how important she would become to the franchise.
She arrived after the prequel trilogy had already wrapped up, and evolved into one of the most significant characters in the entire Star Wars saga. From The Clone Wars to Star Wars Rebels, The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka, her story has only continued to grow.
Now, thanks to the events of The Mandalorian and Grogu, Star Wars may have just planted the seeds for a reunion that reaches all the way back to Ahsoka’s very first adventure on screen. And if it happens, it would bring together two characters who haven’t shared a scene in 19 years.
One of the more interesting elements in The Mandalorian and Grogu was the return of Rotta the Hutt. Fans who primarily follow the live-action side of Star Wars may not have recognized him right away, but Rotta has actually been around since The Clone Wars movie.
Back then, he was just a kidnapped Huttlet whose rescue mission became the first assignment for Anakin Skywalker and his brand-new Padawan, Ahsoka Tano.
The mission was a defining moment for the newly formed master-apprentice duo. Throughout the adventure, Ahsoka spent plenty of time carrying the young Hutt and protecting him from danger.
In the end, she was the one who personally returned Rotta to his father, Jabba the Hutt. At the time, it felt like a one-off story and the last time these characters would ever meet. Nearly two decades later, Star Wars has suddenly made that assumption look a lot less certain.
The ending of The Mandalorian and Grogu takes Rotta in a direction that few fans would have expected. Rather than following the traditional path of the Hutts, he chooses to align himself with the New Republic and continue the fight against the Empire.
That decision opens up all kinds of storytelling possibilities. Not only could it put him alongside some of the Rebellion's most recognizable heroes, but it also creates the possibility of interactions with characters like Leia Organa, which would be fascinating to see unfold.
More importantly, Star Wars has now established exactly where Rotta is in the current timeline. While there’s no official confirmation that he will appear again, the movie clearly leaves the door open for future appearances.
Whether that comes in a sequel to The Mandalorian and Grogu, a future season of The Mandalorian, or another project entirely remains to be seen.
But there’s one project that feels particularly intriguing: Ahsoka Season 2.
The timelines of Ahsoka and The Mandalorian and Grogu line up in a way that makes Rotta’s involvement a real possibility. The movie establishes that Rotta is working closely with Zeb Orrelios, and fans have been speculating for quite some time that Zeb will have a larger role in Ahsoka Season 2 as the Ghost crew slowly comes back together.
If Zeb is involved and Rotta remains connected to him, there’s a believable path for the giant Hutt to cross paths with Ahsoka once again, which would be so cool!
magine Ahsoka looking at a towering, heavily built Hutt and realizing it's the same little Huttlet she spent an entire mission carrying around during the Clone Wars. That reaction alone would be worth seeing.
Of course, a few pieces still need to fall into place. Ahsoka and Sabine Wren are currently stranded on Peridea, while Rotta remains in the main galaxy. Before any reunion can happen, Ahsoka needs a way home.
While it's fun to imagine Zeb and Rotta launching a rescue mission, the more likely scenario is that Ahsoka and Sabine find their own route back. There’s also the practical side of production.
Bringing a character like Rotta to life in a live-action Disney+ series would require a significant investment, which could influence whether Lucasfilm decides to pursue the idea.
Still, Star Wars has now created a path for this reunion to happen, and it’s one that ties directly back to Ahsoka’s very first appearance in the franchise.
For longtime fans who have followed her journey from an impulsive Padawan to one of the galaxy’s most respected heroes, seeing her reunite with Rotta after all these years would be a fun full-circle moment that connects the past and present of Star Wars in a surprisingly meaningful way.
