STAR WARS: SKELETON CREW Director Says Series Will Bring a "Childlike Perspective" to the STAR WARS Universe

I’ve been curious about Lucasfilm’s upcoming series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. I’ve liked everything I’ve heard about the series and what’s been teased and I just hope that it delivers a strong and fun story.

One of the directors of the series is Lee Isaac Chung, who also directed the upcoming summer movie Twisters, and he recently talked about the show.

While a guest on Inside Total Film podcast, Chung teased what we can expect from the series, saying: "I can’t wait for people to see this thing.

“It’s got a lot of Jon Watts in it, and anyone who’s a fan of what Jon Watts does – he’s very childlike in a beautiful way, in the way that he tells stories, and how he captures a childlike perspective in things.

“He brings that beautiful perspective to this story of young people in the Star Wars universe."

Chung goes on to tease that the series will brig something very different to the Star Wars universe, saying: “I felt like I hadn’t seen this. When I read all of the scripts, and when I was looking at the design of what he was designing – he asked if I would be on board.

“It was a no-brainer for me once I saw what he was working on. And then, also, working with him on that show, and with Jude and all the incredible actors who we have – it was a lot of fun. We were just having fun all the time. The kids were incredible and great.”

“What I hope is that it’s really going to touch families, and families are going to want to spend a lot of time with the show.”

The series has been described as ”a galactic version of classic Amblin coming of age adventure films of the ’80s.” The story will follow four young kids from a tiny little planet, and they end up getting lost in the Star Wars galaxy and embark on a journey to find their way back home.

The film was pitched to Lucasfilm as “Goonies in Star Wars," and it’s been explained that while the series stars four kids, “it's not a kid’s show."

The adventure that they find themselves on is said to be an intense and dark journey. In the story, four kids make “a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet and get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Finding their way home, meeting unlikely allies and enemies will be a great adventure than they ever imagined."

Producer Christopher Ford offered some new details on the series saying that they set out to tell a fun adventure story. He said: "Skeleton Crew's tone is an adventure.”

He continued: “We wanted it to be a lot of fun. But of course, along with adventure comes the downside of it, which is danger. And when the kids are in danger, it's extra fraught. So we played with that, but overall we wanted it to be just a fun adventure."

Ford continued to talk about the tone of the series saying: "Hopefully it can be for all ages. When we told Kathy Kennedy about that we wanted to go for that Amblin tone, which she perfected over the years, what she would say is that they never thought of those as movies for kids. They just happen to be about kids, a story of a kid going on an adventure. So it could be for anyone."

Jude Law also previously talked about his character in the story, saying: "I can't tell you very much about my character. He is someone the children meet on their attempt to get home. He is like a lot of the world that they experience: contradictory, and at times a place of nurture and other times a place of threat."

He added: "Because it's through their eyes, at times there's a sort of goofy nature and a goofy relationship between the kids and the adults. And then other times it's really quite dark and quite scary, which I guess is what the world probably looks like to an awful lot of 11-year-olds."

The children in the series are played by Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong. The episodes in the show will be directed by Bryce Dallas Howard, The Daniels, David Lowery, Jake Schreier, and Lee Isaac Chung. The Mandalorian's Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni will executive produce.

The series is set to premiere on Disney+ by this Christmas.
