Stellan Skarsgård Reportedly Passed on a Christopher Dent Role in THE BATMAN: PART II

As The Batman: Part II gears up to start filming later this year, casting details are continuing to surface and one of them is pretty surprising. A new report claims that Stellan Skarsgård was offered a key role in Matt Reeves’ sequel… and turned it down.

With most of the major parts now locked in, there’s one notable role still floating around: Christopher Dent, the troubled father of Harvey Dent.

Word is that Reeves has been circling established talent for the part. It was previously rumored that Brad Pitt was in talks before Sebastian Stan landed the role of Harvey Dent. Now, according to The Hot Mic’s Jeff Sneider, Skarsgård was also approached to play Dent Sr.

Why did Skarsgård pass? That part remains unclear.

As for what Reeves is cooking up in The Batman: Part II, details are still locked down tight. There have been whispers that the sequel could introduce a second male villain, though nothing concrete has surfaced about who that might be.

Reeves previously teased that the central antagonist is someone who has “never really been done in a movie before.” Some fans believe he could have been referring to Johansson’s character when he made that comment, but until something official drops, it’s all speculation.

One thing Reeves has made clear is that secrecy matters. “Because of what the first movie was and what [The Batman: Part 2] is, which is so much a detective story, the idea of trying to protect the secrets of the movie is super important because it’s a mystery.

“That would be an extra level of heartbreak if that part of it started getting out. You wanna keep the surprise so the fans... can have the fun experience that I always love going to the movies, which was to go and be surprised,” the filmmaker said in a recent interview.

That mystery-first approach seems to extend even to the cast. In addition to The Penguin star Colin Farrell and several other actors already involved, Robert Pattinson has read the script. Apparently, it was delivered to him in a secure envelope that required a separate code just to open. That’s some next-level Gotham security.

Reeves admitted he was eager to see how Pattinson would react to the story, especially since it takes Bruce Wayne and Batman into new territory.

"He’s Batman, so if he doesn’t like it, not good. So, I was super excited because I thought that he really would [like it] because the things that it does for his character, for Batman, and for [Bruce Wayne] has never been done before in this way. And I had a feeling he would respond in this way, the fact that he did was incredibly encouraging,” Reeves added.

With casting still in motion and the villain situation under wraps, The Batman: Part II is shaping up to be another intense, character-driven chapter in Reeves’ Gotham saga. We’ll see who ultimately steps into the role of Christopher Dent, but Skarsgård definitely would’ve been great in the role.

The Batman: Part II is set to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.
