Stephen King's Desperation Is Getting a Film Adaptation From Sam Raimi and the FINAL DESTINATION: BLOODLINES Directors
If you've been waiting for another deep dive into Stephen King's massive library of stories, here's one that should get horror fans excited. King's 1996 novel Desperation is officially making its way back to the big screen, and the creative team that's coming together for the project makes this one especially interesting.
According to Jeff Sneider on The InSneider, Sam Raimi, King, and Final Destination: Bloodlines directors Adam B. Stein and Zach Lipovsky are teaming up for a new adaptation of Desperation. Raimi is producing the film, while Stein and Lipovsky are set to direct for Searchlight Pictures.
This isn't the first time Desperation has been adapted. The novel previously became a 2006 made-for-TV movie starring Ron Perlman, Tom Skerritt, and Steven Weber. While that version found its audience, there's no question this new adaptation has the chance to deliver something much bigger and more cinematic.
For those who haven't read the novel, Desperation is one of King's more unsettling supernatural thrillers.
Desperation is “a story about several people who, while traveling along the desolated Highway 50 in Nevada, get abducted by Collie Entragian, the deputy of the fictional mining town of Desperation.
“Entragian uses various pretexts for the abductions, from an arrest for drug possession to ‘rescuing’ a family from a nonexistent gunman. It becomes clear to the captives that Entragian has been possessed by an evil being named Tak, who has control over the surrounding desert wildlife and must change hosts to keep itself alive.
“They begin to fight for their freedom, sanity and lives before realizing that if they are ever to escape Desperation, they must trap Tak in the place from which he came.”
King released Desperation alongside its companion novel, The Regulators. The two books feature many of the same characters but tell completely different stories in alternate realities, making them one of the author's most fascinating literary experiments.
One of the coolest aspects of this project is seeing Raimi and King officially collaborating. There's a great full-circle story connecting the two. Long before Raimi became one of horror's most celebrated filmmakers, King's glowing review of The Evil Dead helped shine a spotlight on the low-budget indie film.
Raimi has often credited that endorsement with giving the movie credibility at a time when it desperately needed it. Decades later, they're finally working together on a King adaptation, and that's a pretty awesome moment for horror fans.
I'm especially excited about this one because Desperation is a great Stephen King novel. It's creepy, intense, strange, and packed with unforgettable imagery that feels tailor-made for the screen. Tak is an incredibly unsettling villain, and the isolated Nevada setting creates an atmosphere that's both haunting and oppressive.
Stein and Lipovsky also seem like a great fit after what they pulled off with Final Destination: Bloodlines. They proved they know how to balance suspense, horror, and memorable set pieces while still delivering strong character moments. Pairing that directing duo with Raimi producing gives this adaptation a lot of potential.
It's still early days for the project, but this is already shaping up to be one of the Stephen King adaptations I'll be watching most closely. In the right hands, Desperation has everything it needs to become an unforgettable horror film.
