Steve Buscemi Joins FX’s FAR CRY Series From Noah Hawley and Rob Mac

Steve Buscemi has signed on for another intriguing TV project, and this one already had my attention before his name entered the mix.

The acclaimed actor has officially joined FX's upcoming anthology series Far Cry, which is being developed by Fargo creator Noah Hawley and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star and creator Rob Mac.

Buscemi joins previously announced cast members Rob Mac and Lizzy Caplan in what is shaping up to be one of the more interesting video game adaptations currently in development.

The series is based on Ubisoft's successful Far Cry video game franchise, but much like the games themselves, the show won't follow one continuous story. Instead, each season will tell its own standalone tale, introducing a new setting and an entirely new cast of characters.

It's a format that fits the franchise perfectly, considering every mainline Far Cry game has carved out its own distinct world, heroes, and unforgettable villains.

At the moment, FX is keeping story details under wraps, and there's no word yet on who Buscemi will be playing. Whether he ends up portraying an eccentric ally, a morally questionable survivor, or the season's central antagonist, Buscemi has the kind of unpredictable screen presence that can elevate just about any role.

He's one of those actors who immediately makes a project more interesting. Throughout his career, Buscemi has built an incredible résumé by playing characters that are often strange, vulnerable, intimidating, funny, or all of those things at once.

From Boardwalk Empire to Fargo, he's repeatedly proven that he can steal scenes without ever feeling like he's trying to. There's an authenticity to every performance that makes even his most unusual characters feel believable.

That versatility feels like a natural fit for the world of Far Cry, a franchise that's built its reputation on memorable personalities just as much as explosive action.

Since launching in 2004, Far Cry has become one of Ubisoft's biggest gaming franchises, spanning six mainline releases through 2021 along with five spinoff titles.

The series has earned a devoted fanbase thanks to its first-person action, massive open-world environments, memorable standalone stories, and the colorful villains who often become the heart of each game.

Rather than adapting one specific title, FX appears to be embracing the anthology format that made the games so successful. Every season can explore a completely different corner of the Far Cry universe while introducing new characters and fresh conflicts, giving Hawley and his creative team plenty of room to build something original without being locked into one game's storyline.

The series is executive produced by Noah Hawley, who previously created FX's acclaimed anthology series Fargo and also developed Alien: Earth through his 26 Keys production banner.

Rob Mac, creator of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and executive producer of Welcome to Wrexham, also serves as an executive producer through his More Better Productions banner.

Video game adaptations have come a long way over the past several years, and Far Cry has the ingredients to become another standout if it captures the same unpredictable energy that made the games so popular.

With Noah Hawley leading the creative vision, Rob Mac helping shape the series, and now Steve Buscemi joining the cast, this is exciting!
