STRANGER THINGS is Reportedly Getting an Anime Series Set in Tokyo
Stranger Things is one of the most popular shows on Netflix, and the flagship series will be coming to an end with its fifth season. There are plans to keep the franchise alive, though, with spinoff projects. The details of those spinoffs that are being developed have yet to be revealed, but a new report has surfaced on What's on Netflix that says one of these projects is an anime series.
They say that the anime series is titled Stranger Things Tokyo and that it’s been in development for "quite some time." The first rumors of this show’s existence came around in early 2021, but there has yet to be an official announcement.
There is a logline that has leaked, though, and it reads: "An encounter with the Upside Down evolves into a grand adventure for video game-loving twin brothers living on the outskirts of 1980s Tokyo."
An 80s-set anime series for this franchise would be pretty cool and the thought of a story being set in Tokyo is awesome. To give you a little taste of what a Stranger Things anime might look like, you can see a fun fan-made video that was created here.
The Duffer Bros., the creators of Stranger Things have teased a spinoff show in the past, saying: “It’s not following…I’ve read these rumors that there’s gonna be an Eleven spinoff, that there’s gonna be a Steve and Dustin spinoff or that it’s another number. That’s not interesting to me because we’ve done all that. We’ve spent I don’t know how many hours exploring all of that. So it’s very different.”
They went on to say that the spinoff will be “1000% different” than the flagship series. So what will the connective tissue be for the spinoff? They say it is the “storytelling sensibility.” The project would be a "story that connects to the Stranger Things world, but it really is more about how we're telling that story."
It will be interesting to see what comes of this!
