STREET FIGHTER Throws Down in Action-Packed New Teaser Loaded With Classic Moves
The fighters are throwing down in a new teaser for the upcoming Street Fighter movie, and the latest footage packs in plenty of familiar faces, signature attacks, and brutal matchups.
Following the recent second trailer, the new social media spot offers another look at the movie’s live-action fights, including more of Ryu battling Blanka, Chun-Li facing Cammy, and several characters showing off the moves fans know from the franchise.
The story follows Chun-Li as she reunites old friends Ryu and Ken Masters, hoping the two can put their grudges aside long enough to take on the Shadaloo criminal organization and its leader, M. Bison.
The teaser gives us a better taste of how the movie is translating the video games’ fighting styles to live action. Guile pulls off his Flash Kick, Chun-Li unleashes her Spinning Bird Kick, and Ryu fires off his signature Hadouken.
There’s also plenty of hand-to-hand combat as the movie leans into the colorful, over-the-top action that comes with Street Fighter.
Callina Liang, who plays Chun-Li, put some serious work into physically transforming herself for the role. During an interview, Liang explained that playing a fighter famous for her devastating kicks meant building up her legs and training across several martial arts disciplines.
"Chun-Li is all kicks. So we did a bunch of Taekwondo training, Muay Thai, and Wushu (Kung Fu). I did two hours of that a day and strengthened my legs a lot and changed my diet drastically.
When I was bulking, I ate 12 eggs a day. Every two hours I had to have a meal, and I was on the verge of throwing up. But it worked. By the end of the shoot, my thighs had grown six-and-a-half centimeters each.”
Liang also went straight to the games when figuring out how Chun-Li should move, studying the character frame by frame to get those attacks right.
"I downloaded every single version of Street Fighter onto a PS5 and I recorded all of Chun-Li's moves during fights on my phone in slow-mo, so I could play them back and study them," she added.
That dedication should make a difference when Chun-Li starts kicking the hell out of her opponents on the big screen. Based on the footage released so far, the filmmakers are embracing the recognizable attacks and larger-than-life personalities that have defined Street Fighter for decades.
