SUPERGIRL Chinese Trailer Unleashes New Footage as Director Craig Gillespie Talks Sequel Possibilities
With Supergirl set to hit theaters next week, Warner Bros. has released an action-packed new Chinese trailer along with a featurette loaded with fresh footage from the upcoming DC Studios film.
The latest look at Kara Zor-El's big-screen adventure offers fans plenty of new material to dig into, including new alien characters, larger-scale action sequences, and several impressive shots of Supergirl soaring through space.
As anticipation continues to build for the movie's release, the marketing campaign is ramping up at just the right time. While Supergirl will have to contend with the massive arrival of Toy Story 5, which is expected to dominate the box office, early signs suggest the DCU film could perform much better than some of the more conservative projections that surfaced earlier this year.
Initial estimates had the movie tracking closer to the disappointing opening weekend numbers of The Marvels, but recent ticket presale activity appears to paint a more encouraging picture.
Whether that momentum carries through opening weekend remains to be seen, but Warner Bros. is clearly hoping audiences are ready to embrace the Girl of Steel's first solo adventure in the new DC Universe.
The newly released featurette also gives fans a closer look at the film's scope, highlighting several never-before-seen moments from Kara's journey across the cosmos.
Of course, whenever a major superhero movie arrives, questions about sequels quickly follow. During an interview with Omelete, Craig Gillespie was asked what it would take for him to return for a second Supergirl movie if DC Studios decides to move forward with one.
His answer was simple: "I have to read the script. [On the first film] I read it, got to the second scene and was like, 'Oh, I'm in, I'm totally in.'"
It's an understandable response from a filmmaker who clearly connected with the material the first time around. Whether a sequel happens will likely depend on audience reception and box office performance, but Gillespie doesn't appear opposed to returning if the right story comes along.
Meanwhile, Milly Alcock confirmed that her future as Kara is already taking shape. While speaking with the outlet, the actress revealed she'll soon be stepping back into the role. "Maybe soon, maybe in a few weeks."
That comment appears to reference her next appearance in the DCU, with Alcock expected to suit up again on the Man of Tomorrow set.
The future of DC's female heroes was also part of the conversation. Ana Nogueira, who wrote Supergirl and was later tapped by DC Studios to write the upcoming Wonder Woman reboot after beginning work on a Teen Titans project, shared another character she'd love to see receive the spotlight.
"I'm not going to say what I would love to adapt. I'm going to say what I would love to see someone else do, and I would love to see someone else do Catwoman."
That would certainly be an exciting addition to DC Studios' growing slate.
Directed by Gillespie from Nogueira's screenplay, Supergirl stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa.
The film follows Kara after a ruthless enemy strikes close to home, forcing her into an uneasy alliance as she embarks on an interstellar quest driven by both vengeance and justice.
With new footage continuing to showcase the movie's cosmic scale and emotional stakes, fans won't have to wait much longer to see whether Supergirl becomes the next major success story for DC Studios.
