SUPERGIRL Movie Synopsis Teases Kara Zor-El’s Fight To Understand Who She Is And Who She’ll Become
The Supergirl teaser trailer is just days away, and Thursday is shaping up to be the moment fans finally get their first look at Milly Alcock soaring into the DCU.
While we wait, a newly released synopsis is offering the clearest picture yet of what this cosmic adventure has in store. It hints at a dangerous new threat, an unexpected alliance and a journey that forces Kara to face her Kryptonian past in ways she never wanted to.
According to the synopsis, first shared by Feature First, “DC Studios' 'Supergirl' hits theaters this summer, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl. When an unexpected and ruthless enemy threatens, Kara Zor-El is forced, against her will, to team up with an unlikely companion.”
It goes on to say, “Together, they embark on an epic cosmic journey where revenge and justice are at stake – and where Kara must confront her origins to find her own path as a hero.
“Alcock is joined by Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham and Jason Momoa in key roles. Peter Safran and James Gunn are producing the film for DC Studios.”
This gives us a promising sense of where Kara stands in the DCU. She’s already appeared in Superman, where she drunkenly retrieved Krypto from the Fortress of Solitude.
The new movie looks ready to explore how this rough around the edges version of Kara evolves into someone who actually wants to save people rather than tolerate them. The project also continues the comic inspirations of Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which charted a similar revenge fueled odyssey.
A return to Krypton also feels inevitable since Zor-El and Alura In-Ze are confirmed to appear. Over the summer, James Gunn spoke about this interpretation of Kara and how unlike her cousin she didn’t grow up with the privilege of a warm, stable home.
“She's a mess. She's a total mess,” Gunn said. “I mean, I think as we learn, she's had a completely different background from Superman. A much more difficult background.”
He continued by adding, “He's had this wonderful upbringing by these two parents that loved him and were very healthy. And her background was much different than that. And she's ended up different than her cousin.”
The movie’s story follows Kara as she travels across the galaxy to celebrate her twenty first birthday with Krypto the Superdog. She meets Ruthye, a determined young woman with her own painful history, and their encounter launches them into a relentless pursuit of vengeance that spans worlds.
Supergirl lands in theaters on June 26, 2026.
