SUPERMAN's Skyler Gisondo Talks About Clark Kent and Jimmy Olsen's Friendship in James Gunn’s New Movie
James Gunn’s Superman is shaping up to be a fresh but classic take on the Man of Steel, and one of the ways it’s doing that is by putting a real spotlight on the friendships that ground Clark Kent’s humanity.
One of those key relationships is between Clark and Jimmy Olsen, and Skyler Gisondo, who plays Jimmy, recently shared some fun insight into what we can expect.
Speaking on the DC Studios Showcase podcast, Gisondo described his dynamic with David Corenswet’s Superman as an easy, natural bond.
“David and I got the opportunity to hang out a bit before we started filming and kind of just became friends,” Gisondo said. “And our scenes, the little stuff we have together, we really are just buddies, there’s a real ease to it. It’s an opportunity to see the human side of Superman.”
Of course, Gisondo couldn’t help but throw in a little humor about working with Corenswet, who’s clearly been hitting the gym hard to fill out the suit.
“Also, David’s so yoked, he’s huge in this movie, and I feel like I gave him the opportunity to talk to another dude with a similar body,” Gisondo joked.
“He gets to relax because very rarely does he meet another dude that also lifts, and gets it, and is jacked. So we kind of bro down, in that way.” It’s the perfect kind of self-aware humor you’d expect from Jimmy Olsen — and a good sign that Gisondo really understands the spirit of the character.
That easygoing connection makes sense as Gunn’s been vocal about wanting to show a Superman rooted in kindness, hope, and real-world values. Having Clark simply "bro down" with Jimmy helps reveal the guy behind the cape, the farm kid from Kansas who still values friendship and trust, and sets the tone for a DC Universe built on character just as much as spectacle.
Gunn’s Superman is going to drop audiences into Clark’s life already in progress. Clark’s juggling life at the Daily Planet, a budding relationship with Lois Lane, and the pressures of being Superman in a world that’s becoming increasingly populated with other heroes.
It’s all about reconciling his Kryptonian birth with his Earth upbringing, which puts that personal, human side front and center.
Corenswet leads the cast as Clark/Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan taking on the fiercely intelligent Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult stepping in as a ruthless Lex Luthor.
The film also brings in a handful of other DC heroes, including Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, setting up a DCU where Superman isn’t the only superhero around.
Superman is the first big step into Gunn’s new DCU, launching "Chapter One: Gods and Monsters," and it flies into theaters on July 11th.
