Sydney Sweeney Joins Legendary’s Live-Action GUNDAM Movie

The live-action Gundam movie just took a big step forward as Sydney Sweeney is in final talks to join the film. Legendary’s ambitious adaptation of the iconic mecha franchise is finally starting to lock in some major talent.

While details about Sweeney’s role are being kept under wraps, her involvement adds momentum to a project that’s been quietly in the works for a while. Legendary has declined to comment, but with Sweeney’s current streak of buzzy roles, it’s no wonder Legendary would want to cast her.

The film is being directed by Sweet Tooth showrunner Jim Mickle, who’s also writing the script and producing through his Nightshade banner with partner Linda Moran. Mickle took over directing duties after Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) was first attached when Legendary announced the film back in 2021.

Mobile Suit Gundam was created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, and it’s a mecha anime series that debuted in 1979. Set in a futuristic era called the Universal Century, the story takes place during a brutal conflict between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, a space colony that seeks independence from Earth’s oppressive rule.

Zeon uses advanced mobile suits, humanoid combat machines piloted by soldiers, to gain the upper hand in the war. The story follows Amuro Ray, a young boy who finds himself piloting the Earth Federation’s prototype mobile suit, the RX-78-2 Gundam, after a Zeon attack on his colony.

Sweeney has been busy, and she recently starred in the psychological horror film Immaculate and Ron Howard’s Eden, which premiered at TIFF. Coming up, she’s got a stacked lineup with Apple TV+’s Echo Valley, an untitled Christy Martin boxing biopic, Euphoria Season 3, Lionsgate’s The Housemaid, and Colman Domingo’s Scandalous!.
