Taika Waititi Continues to Confuse Us About What's Happening With His STAR WARS Film
Taika Waititi is supposed to be developing a new Star Wars film for Lucasfilm, and Kathleen Kennedy has said that his film will be the next Star Wars movie to be released. Waititi has previously explained that he is looking to create something new with the franchise and expand the universe beyond all of the characters and locations that we’re familiar with.
The filmmaker has previously said that he’s still trying to figure out an idea for the movie and that he’s “still throwing everything at the wall.” Well, in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the director still hasn’t quite figured out his idea and he’s not even 100% confident that his movie is going to happen.
When asked about all the Star Wars film projects that have been started and then abandoned, Waititi responded saying:
“Might happen to me. And I think Taika [of] 10 years ago would be so panicked and nervous at the prospect of that. But if it’s not right, it’s not right. If it’s not ready, it’s not ready. [With] Star Wars, I don’t want to rush. It’s something I wouldn’t want to just leap into and not feel that it’s unique, it’s my film, and it makes sense. Because that would be a disaster. I’m writing at the moment. So I’m gonna do my best to come up with an idea that everyone loves.”
He’s got to have some kind of idea that he wants to move forward with, right? In a previous interview, Waititi talked about wanting to do something new and different with the franchise saying:
“Look, I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand. I don’t think that I’m any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone’s like, ‘Oh great, well that’s the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother.’ That all stands alone, that’s great, though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it’s a very small story.”
When this quote was brought up in the new interview and it was pointed out to him that if he is looking to avoid Star Wars tropes, the movie wouldn’t really be a Star Wars movie and Waititi agreed and then took back his previous statement:
“You know what? Whoever said that is actually probably right. Now that I think about it. Like as you were saying that, I was like, ‘Yeah, if you take away all of the Star Wars stuff, it’s not Star Wars.’ So I retract my thing that I said a couple of weeks ago!”
Wiaiti is causing all kinds of confusion about this project with these interviews, and I just can’t help but think he’s messing around with us and that he’s much farther along in the process than he’s saying. But, then again, maybe he doesn’t have an idea! Maybe he’s going through some behind the scenes stuff with Lucasfilm in trying to come up with a new Star Wars story. I have no idea, but we’ll find out soon enough.
